Overview:
Dong Xuan Market is one of the largest markets in Hanoi, in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. The market has a history of hundreds of years from the feudal period of the Nguyen Dynasty.
Location:
Dong Xuan Market is located in the Old Quarter, the West is Dong Xuan Street, the North is Hang Khoai Street, the South is Cau Dong Street, and the East is Dong Xuan Market Lane. The market gate looks to the west, and in front is a small space. In the North, there is Huyen Thien restaurant – later changed to Huyen Thien pagoda. Right behind the market is Bac Qua market. People hold markets on two plots of land next to Cau Dong pagoda on Hang Duong street and next to Bach Ma temple on Hang Buom street because those two plots are near the river wharf, convenient for boats to travel. So many people call both Dong Xuan – Bac Qua markets.
History:
After becoming a French concession in 1888, when the last vestiges of the To Lich River and Tai Chi Lake were completely filled, the governor Landes Charles (in power from June 8, 1899, to January 15, 1890) came out. decided to remove the two old markets of Hanoi, which were meeting next to Bach Ma and Cau Dong temples, and gathered all of them to meet at the small market located in front of Huyen Thien temple, in Dong Xuan ward. In 1889 it was called Moi Market, but in 1890 it was changed to Dong Xuan. In the first year, the market is open-air or covered with a thatched roof like the two old markets.
