Souvenirs and Local Specialties to Buy During the Boat Tour on The Tien River

I think it is also not awry to mention that no trip to the Four Sacred Islet is complete without purchasing some local specialties. Here are the options with some recommendations:

Popular Local Products to Bring Home

  • Coconut Candy: Being also known for its production on a commercial scale in Bến Tre, otherwise named Coconut Land, the candy is available in many flavors, such as durian, pandan, or cacao, and can be a reminder of both sweet and inexpensive of the unusual journey.
  • Honey: Tortoise islet boasts some good examples of this product. The visitors may buy pure one or royal jelly, which can be helpful when trying to stay ahead of the curve, and pollen.
  • Handicrafts: I was told that the islet was also known for the use of coconut wood, producing handicrafts, such as bowls, spoons, forks, or some other lovely stuff of the kind. I think it might be a brilliant souvenir.
  • Specialty Fruits: Fresh fruits such as durian, rambutan, and mangosteen are for purchase. Not only are they delicious, but they also serve as a healthy present to bring home.

Where to Buy and What to Look For

  • Recommendations for Authentic Products: For fresher and more properly priced fruits, you may look at local markets and farm shops at the Islet. Tourist shops may offer similar products but the ones at the market and farm shops are more often more authentic.
  • Tips on Bargaining: Polite bargaining is usual in local markets. Always bargain respectfully with vendors.

The unique views surrounding them all, from the verdant, fruit-laden orchards, at Dragon Islet to the fathomless depths of history at the Phoenix Islet. The Mekong River, the ‘Mother of Waters’, is the heart and soul of mainland South-East Asia. Millions of people depend on its waters. It’s a way of life, a home for the spirits, the defining element in the everlasting battle for survival, and the foundation and boundaries of cultures and kingdoms across eons. The river speaks of the past and the future, of the eternally recurring cycles of nature, of the people living upstream and downstream, of survival, beauty and danger.

Foreigners can’t appreciate the role of the river in the lives of those who live in the Mekong basin. It influences every aspect of their daily existence, shaping not only the land, but also the people themselves.

The Mekong Basin extends over 795,000km2. More than 70 million people, 55 million of which inhabit the watershed area lying within Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam, depend on the river and its tributaries for food, water and transport. At 4,350km, the Mekong is the longest river in Southeast Asia and the 12th longest in the world.

The river runs from its source deep in China’s Tsinghai Province through the eastern part of Tibet. From Yunnan province, it becomes the border between Myanmar and Laos, and between Laos and Thailand. From there it surges across Cambodia to Phnom Penh, where the Bassac River branches off. The two rivers continue to divide into nine outlets, the Cuu Long (Nine Dragons) of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, and finally discharge into the East Sea. The river is navigable from the delta to Southern Laos, where massive waterfalls near the Cambodian border prevent boats from travelling further.

About nine-tenths of the people in the Lower Mekong Basin are engaged in agriculture, mostly rice production on a massive scale, for which irrigation from the Mekong River is essential. A substantial proportion is exported, thus providing the staple diet of a far greater number than just those living in the area.

The Mekong River is also very rich in fish, the single most important source of animal protein in the diet of people living in the Lower Mekong Basin.
