History of Chi Lang Park

Let’s take a trip back in time and explore the fascinating history of Chi Lang Park a tranquil green oasis that has seen Ho Chi Minh City change over decades. First developed by the French in the early 1920s, it was then named Parc P. Pages, for an official of France. One of the reasons it is so iconic is because of its location: it was located at the intersection of thoroughfares like Catinat, now named Đồng Khởi, Le Thanh Ton, and Ly Tu Trong. This intriguing blend of modern skyscrapers and parkland from yonder years has turned this busy junction of roads into an extremely unique pedestrian utopia.

Evolution Over Time

After 1955, the park was named Chi Lang, borrowing its name from the very famous Chi Lang battlefield, an important place in the history of Vietnam. It has also remained a loved green park among locals through the years as the city grew more urbanized. Yet, if not because of, the encroaching high-rise neighbors and modern developments, this park has retained much of its core silent retreat status- standing the test of time amidst the timeworn metropolis.

The wide pathways, statues, and well-landscaped greenery of this park reflect French initiatives on how to integrate the expanse of natural settings into its urban contrasting surroundings. Towering trees shade you cool with some trees nearly a century old, creating a tranquil oasis in the middle of all lively streets. Chi Lang Park also exudes lots of cultural significance, being surrounded by iconic cultural landmarks. The famous La Pagode Café, for one, is within walking distance from the park and was the hangout spot where most of the city’s intellectuals, artists, and writers congregated during the 1950s and 60s. The Old Post Office is another example of French colonial architecture and is also the country’s largest post office.
  • Jade Emperor Pagoda: Building in 1909 in honor of the supreme Taoist god, this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in HCMC, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings.
  • Cu Chi Tunnels: Watch a short introductory video showing how they were constructed, then spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels. Also, on display are various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters made by 500 pound bombs dropped by B52 bombers.
