Street Food Highlights
Let your food tour in Hanoi start with some of the dishes locals like a steaming bowl of pho at around 40,000-50,000 VND, or the sour and spicy bun rieu at an estimated price of 30,000-40,000 VND. Want something easier to take out? You really would not want to miss banh cuon, rice rolls filled with minced pork and mushrooms at an affordable price of only 20,000 to 30,000 VND per serving. For something sweet, che -a light Vietnamese dessert soup is the same price as 10,000 to 20,000 VND for a sweet end to your meal. And if you stop in during the cooler months, you’ll also especially appreciate the crispy warming banh khoai (fried sweet potato cakes) for a mere 15,000-25,000 VND.
The market assumes an entirely different face during Tet, or the Vietnamese New Year, when festive specialties of banh chung, or square sticky rice cake, and xoi gac, or red sticky rice, are sold at 50,000-70,000 VND apiece, while a deliciously sour plate of pickled vegetables would work perfectly with the meal.
Local Ingredients and Vendors
So much of Hanoi’s flavourful food secret is in the fresh ingredients themselves Buoi Market is where they go to get them. Exotically-named fruits ranging from dragon fruit to pomelo, aromatic herbs from coriander to perilla, and unique condiments-fermented shrimp paste, anyone?-line the stands. Vendors-many having their family run the stands for generations-are usually happy to give tips on how these ingredients are used in recipes.
Don’t be a stranger to the friendliest food stalls. Locals would recommend trying crispy banh xeo a Vietnamese version of sizzling pancakes- for as low as 30,000-40,000 VND. Or one may have nem ran or fried spring rolls at prices of 25,000-30,000 VND. Complementing the food with a glass of tra da or in other words, iced tea costs just 5,000 VND, but it elevates the experience.
Interactive Experiences
For those interested in more than just eating from Hanoi’s culinary world, Buoi Market offers more. The vendors and locals part with no hesitation-traditional recipes included anyone willing enough to teach the recipes, thus turning your visit into an impersonal cooking adventure. Imagine going back home with tips and tricks on how to make fresh banh cuon or nem from scratch! These sessions, sometimes informal, come out to be many tourists’ highlight on Hanoi street food tours. And don’t be afraid to ask about the best way to enjoy your finds-locals swear by pairing sweet che with strong Vietnamese coffee for a combo that cannot be beaten.
