Must-Try Vietnamese Dishes in Danang
Mi Quang (Quang Noodles)
Mi Quang (Quang Noodles)
Among the Must-eat food in Danang is Mi Quang. It is one of the most recognizable Vietnamese dishes. The dish is the very essence of a rich, thick, and flavorful soup made by stewing pork or chicken bones in broth, spiced with turmeric to give it its golden yellow color. Because of the broth richness the noodles used are short thick and flat. The bowl has generally got a protein like shrimp, pork chicken, etc. apart from the meat or fish most likely to be some fresh herbs, peanuts, and crispy rice crackers. The eater is accompanied by a small dish of greens, lime, and chili, to be added at will, balancing the soup as you wish. This perfect combination of texture and flavor makes it a savory dish that reflects the culinary tastes of former central Vietnam.
Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Pancake)
Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Pancake)
Banh Xeo, also Vietnamese pancakes, is yet another classic dish that boasts the diversity provided by Vietnamese cuisine in Danang. Vietnamese pancakes are made from rice flour, turmeric, and coconut milk, and then filled with a mixture of pork, shrimp, and crunchy bean sprouts. When cooked, the pancakes turn out crisp on the outside but remain tender on the inside. Basically, they are complemented with fresh herbs, lettuce, and a great wrap of fish sauce, lime, garlic, and chili to dip in. In Danang, the fillings of its Banh Xeo may vary, maybe for the squid or mushrooms, depending on the local ingredients and taste. Crispy, savory, and fresh elements come into play in the dish that has been a favorite with many locals and tourists.
Cao Lau
Cao Lau
Cao Lau is an interesting noodle dish; it hails from Hoi An but has continued to be one of the main dishes that define Vietnamese food in Danang. Cao Lau is made from chewy rice noodles. The noodles are then left to sit in the water in which the Cham people used to cook from their wells. Thus, they are quite different in terms of texture and taste, all in all. Toppings for Cao Lau include slices of barbecued pork, fresh herbs, bean sprouts, and crispy croutons made of fried noodle dough. They are lightly drenched with the broth and soy sauce-filled dressing, which offers just the right balance of flavors. Cao Lau is interestingly based on history, and its preparation is truly unique.
Nem Lui (Lemongrass Pork Skewers)
Nem Lui (Lemongrass Pork Skewers)
One of the delightful dishes that exactly explains the flavor of Vietnamese food in Danang is lemongrass pork skewers or nem lui. Ground pork, flavored with lemongrass, garlic, and fish sauce, is then barbecued over an open flame to make these skewers. These skewers are usually served with rice paper, fresh herbs, and several different dipping sauces into which the diner will wrap and dip with every bite. It is a satisfying and memorable balance of fragrant lemongrass, savory pork, and bright fresh herbs. Surprisingly social food, Nem Lui is best taken in the company of friends and family while exploring the culinary delights of Danang.
