Tho Nhuom Street: A Must-See Highlight on Any Hanoi Tour

Tho Nhuom Street in Hanoi is a vibrant cultural and historical hub. It features significant history, charming architecture, bustling daily life, and rich culture. Whether you’re into history, food, or local atmosphere, Tho Nhuom Street has something for everyone.

Tradition Meets Modernity in Tho Nhuom Street

Tho Nhuom Street is 928 meters long, connecting Hang Bong and Cua Nam to Ba Trieu and Tran Hung Dao. In Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem District, this roadway connects the wards of Cua Nam and Tran Hung Dao.

Tho Nhuom Street can lead any tourist to a breathtaking mix of colonial-style architecture and modern architectural styles that showcase the city’s rich cultural history. Tho Nhuom Street has endeavored to represent the essence of Hanoi’s heritage, which honors the past while embracing the present.

Allow Impress Travel to explain why Tho Nhuom Street is notable for its colonial and modern architecture. Walking down this street, one will see that it mixes classic components with a bright, youthful appearance.

What’s the History Behind Tho Nhuom Street?

When the French occupied Vietnam, a section of the city between Hang Bong Street and Hai Ba Trung Street was called “rue des teinturiers," or ‘Street of the Dyers.’ This literal interpretation reflects the street’s historical origins in the dyeing and textile industries that dominated the region during the French colonization of Vietnam.

The post-colonial period began on August 10, 1945, following World War II, and fresh changes were seen on the streets. It was renamed Hang Bong Tho Nhuom Street, which draws on local popular nomenclature and suggests a new chapter in the city’s cultural and historical growth during the postcolonial period.

However, it wasn’t until October 1964, amidst a backdrop of major political and administrative changes in Vietnam, that the street received its final official designation. It was renamed Tho Nhuom Street, a name that has endured to the present day, reflecting the evolving historical and cultural landscape of the city.

What Makes Tho Nhuom Street So Notable?

Tho Nhuom Street boasts a deeply intriguing and extensive history. Despite changes and transformations over time, one place that has maintained its historical value is the Memorial House at 90 Tho Nhuom Street, located in the Tran Hung Dao Ward of Hoan Kiem District. This house continues to be a significant historical landmark, preserving its heritage and importance over the years.

House number 90 on Tho Nhuom Street is a distinctive villa with a bright yellow exterior and green surroundings. Originally known as 7 Rue Jean Soler in 1930, it was the residence of Bertheur, Inspector of the Central Finance Department for the Indochina Governor General’s Office. In early April 1930, the Central Committee of the Party moved in with the help of cook Ta Van Ban. Comrade Tran Phu worked on the Party’s Political Platform in the basement, which was kept secret and secure.

In 1960, the Party and State decided to preserve, restore, and protect House No. 90 Tho Nhuom because of its important role in revolutionary history. Today, it is recognized as a key historical site and is open to visitors who want to learn about its heritage. It also serves as the headquarters for the Management Board of Historical Sites and Scenic Areas, which is part of Hanoi City’s Department of Culture and Sports.

The basement of the Memorial House displays important historical items. It features chairs and a table used by Central Party members, an ao dai set, a pair of sandals, a desk lamp, and an electric bell, all once belonging to Comrade Tran Phu. The site is open to everyone, including foreign tourists. It also hosts various events, such as ceremonies for new members, achievement reports, and incense offerings at the statue of the General Secretary during major holidays and festivals.

What Else Can Young Visitors Explore on Tho Nhuom Street?

Besides visiting the historical site, young visitors will love Tho Nhuom Street. This street is filled with exciting places to eat, including trendy cafes and local food stalls. You can try a wide range of tasty dishes here. The lively vibe and great food make Tho Nhuom Street a favorite spot for anyone wanting to dive into the city’s vibrant food scene.

Laika Cafe’s bright yellow color represents youth, happiness, and joy. The owner wants Laika Cafe to be a place that makes a lasting impression and adds value to your life, both materially and spiritually. The true name is “lai ca," meaning “profit both," reflecting the owner’s goal to enrich your experience.

Laika Cafe is a cozy spot where you can capture and cherish life’s special moments. It’s a place to strengthen bonds with loved ones through the laughter of children and meaningful conversations. It offers a warm and welcoming environment to celebrate family, work, love, or self-reflection.

  • 57 Tho Nhuom Sticky Rice Shop

If you’re passionate about street food, Impress Travel highly recommends visiting the 57 Tho Nhuom Sticky Rice Shop. This beloved establishment operates exclusively in the mornings, from approximately 6 AM to 9 or 10 AM. It often runs out of stock before closing, so it’s a good idea to get there early if you want to try their famous sticky rice.

They have tasty toppings like crispy spring rolls, savory Chinese sausage, and flavorful braised pork. Each serving of sticky rice comes with a delicious meat sauce made by the owner. The sticky rice is delicious and worth trying, but at 40,000 VND per serving, it’s a bit pricey, likely due to the shop’s expensive Hanoi location.

The sticky rice shop on Tho Nhuom Street is popular with tourists because famous Vietnamese artists often visit and post about it on social media. This has made it a popular spot for travelers. For locals, it’s a beloved place that’s been around for years and is a trusted spot for sticky rice. The shop is very busy, especially on weekends.

In conclusion

Tho Nhuom Street is recognized as a district that is closely linked to Hanoi’s past and the city’s current pulse. Walking down this road offers a glimpse into the numerous layers of what this city represents, including colonial built aesthetics and modern architecture.

Large buildings from the French colonial era differ greatly from modern architecture. They reflect the evolution of Hanoi’s identity. Tho Nhuom Street combines the city’s heritage with its present, vibrant nature. It is a popular spot for both tourists and locals.
