“Yes, I’ve been a loyal client for 15 years (and yes, I’ve bought the first painting back in the year 2000) . The gallery is my point of reference when it comes to further enhancing my outstanding collection of Vietnamese paintings.
Thank to the extended network of Mr. Long, who is well connected in the local art scene, many doors (including those remaining closed for many other gallery owners in town) to the treasures of the well known but also of the young talented artists will magically open.
People deeply interested in purchasing selected and exquisite vietnamese paintings should also ask to visit the “home based gallery".
I’m already looking forward to the next (almost yearly) visit.
Enjoy”
“Absolutely magnificent art – I am the lucky owner of a most magnificent HUGE oil paining that go home with me safely and is now being framed – the artists in vietnam are unbelievably talented and I definitely suggest that if you are an art lover you will be spoilt for choice here”
“We have collected a lot of Vietnamese art over the years in Ho Chi Min City and Hanoi. Dong Phong came highly recommended by friends who have the same interests. It is a family affair of love for all sorts of Vietnamese art styles and genres. While in Hanoi Mai Lai guided us through many artist’s studios in the back streets and alleys of Hanoi and finally to her home that had an amazing array of superb art. Way beyond the typical gallery fare of the more ordinary galleries. This is not to be missed. it is more than a gallery, it is an adventure.”
Ha Thai Bamboo Lacquer
Ha Thai Bamboo Lacquer
Vietnam’s Ha Thai Lacquer Handicraft Village is well known for its superb lacquer artistry and is situated 20 kilometers from the city center. The renowned “Son son thep vang Cu Trang" artisan village is where the community’s rich history began in the 17th century. It was first praised for producing royal cutlery, but its outstanding craftsmanship led to the nickname “offering to the king."
Mostly on a black background, the lacquer paintings of Ha Thai village use traditional materials like lacquer resin, mother-of-pearl, and gold leaf. By using a distinctive method, lacquer polishing, producing a lasting impression and therefore establishing the hamlet as a well-known lacquer art destination.
For aristocratic households, the town first mostly manufactured beautiful panels and basic home goods such screens, trays, and plates. Artists started experimenting with lacquer materials by the 20th century, then moved to bamboo, wood, lacquer paintings, inlay work, engraving, lacquer on eggshells, and plastic. Improvements included contemporary methods into the lacquer coating procedure. To guarantee quality and endurance, some goods have up to 15 or 16 coats of lacquer.
Ha Thai’s lacquer work distinguishes itself from others by drawing inspiration from nature and employing basic materials to produce luxury goods, something special for this hamlet. Modern artists with creative inventiveness have created a wide spectrum of exquisite, useful objects strongly linked with everyday life, selling their lacquer goods to many European and American nations.
Discover the journey on lacquer workmanship.
Lacquer is an art form with a long history
When visiting the village, one finds peace among the lacquer aroma and busy mechanical noises. The town comes alive first thing in the morning and becomes more bustling from two p.m. on. Among the streets designated for workshops, talented artists are clearly perfecting their trade. About 1,000 artists working in the lacquer arts call the town home, in three hundred families.
Apart from maintaining traditional handicap, Ha Thai is well-known for its ability to promote community experience tourism. Using Vietnam’s unique lacquer painting substance, Ha Thai Village draws both domestic and foreign visitors ready to discover lacquer paintings. Learning about lacquer goods and their uses in everyday life, seeing the manufacturing process, and seeing one of the lacquer craft processes, visitors really become part of the environment.
A remote workshop apart from the bustle provides people looking for practical experience with an opportunity to make their lacquer masterpieces under the direction of talented artists. Here guests may meet an artist who migrated to Ha Thai in order to follow their love of lacquer painting, therefore pioneering the field of experience tourism for this trade.
