Discover the uniqueness of the One Pillar Pagoda

History of the One Pillar Pagoda

Anyone visiting for the first time must appreciate the rich history and culture of this pagoda. According to records, King Le Thai Tong dreamed that the Bodhisattva Buddha was meditating on a lotus platform radiating light in the middle of the lake. Then the Bodhisattva invited the king to accompany him. After regaining consciousness, the king told the monks about Zen wisdom and suggested building a pagoda to worship them. When this pagoda was first built, it was only supported by a stone pillar supporting the small jade pavilion above. In this jade pavilion, there is a statue of Guan Bat Buddha. King Ly Thai Tong often came to the pagoda to chant Buddhist sutras and pray for “lasting blessings", so he named the pagoda " One Pillar Pagoda “.

After several dynasties and historical events, the pagoda was modified and demolished. In particular, after laying destructive mines by French expeditionary forces, one of the towers completely collapsed. After the victory in 1955, the Ministry of Culture took over the capital and decided to renovate the pagoda according to its old construction. Since then, the pagoda has been retained by the city of Hanoi.

Asia’s Most Impressive Architectural pagodas

Recognized in 1962 as a National Architectural Art Historic Site and setting a record as “Asia’s Most Unique Architectural pagoda," One Pillar Pagoda has a building with a small wooden tower perched on a large stone pillar. Located in the middle of Linh Chieu Lake, as beautiful as a giant lotus flower in the middle of the lake. The pillars of the pagoda have only two stone pillars overlapping each other, but they are very strong. The image above shows the Taipei lotus pavilion, designed as a 3-meter-long square on each side, surrounded by waves.

The roof of the One Pillar Pagoda is made of red brick and four curved corners rise to the sky. The image of two dragons placed on the ceiling symbolizes the “double dragon sect", and Eastern culture symbolizes fertility and harmony between yin and yang.

What is special about One Pillar Pagoda?

When visiting the one-pillar pagoda ruins, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the special landscapes of Buddhist pagodas or admire the most unique architecture of Lien Hoa terraces. In addition, you can also see the Linden tree planted for Vietnam by the President of India in 1958, which is now over 60 years old, with lush green branches. In addition, it offers additional services such as drinks, snacks, comfort zones, holiday shopping services, and sunshine deals. If you are looking for a place to sell Vietnamese souvenirs, Hanoi in general, and Buddhist souvenirs in particular, you should not miss this attraction. In front of the altar of Buddha Quan Nu, praying for peace, and health and buying incense will be the highlight of your trip to explore Hanoi.

Stairs of the main hall

To enter the pagoda, visitors must climb 13 steps, about 1 meter wide. These staircases were built during the Ly Dynasty- Ly Thai To and are still almost intact. In particular, stone stelae are introducing the history of the pagoda on two rows of brick walls on either side. The staircase built by Ly Thai To remains intact to this day

Altar and statue of the Bodhisattva

This is one of the stateliest areas of the One Pillar Pagoda. The statue of the Bodhisattva Guanyin is placed in the center of the highest. The base of the statue is an intricately carved wooden lotus flower, painted with gold lacquer. Surrounded by vases and copper stoves…… Although not too fussy, it exudes its style and beauty. The sacred altar of the Bodhisattva Kannon is in the lotus flower.

Bodhi tree

Bodhi is still considered a typical tree of Buddhism, demonstrating its sacred, ancient beauty. The Bodhi tree of the pagoda was presented by the President of India during President Ho Chi Minh’s visit. Under the tree is a stone plaque that reads: “This bodhi tree comes from the bodhi tree of Shakyamuni Buddha in India." In February 1858, President Rajendra Prasad presented President Ho Chi Minh during his visit to India. Under the bodhi tree is a stone stele on which is carved.

Tam Quan Gate

The Three Pillars Gate is also an indispensable part of the tower if you have the opportunity to visit the One Pillar Pagoda. It is an expansion project that has been built over the years. The architecture of the gate resembles a traditional Vietnamese pagoda, consisting of 2 floors and 3 passages. The meaning of the Three Views Gate is the three paths of the Buddhist view: relational, non-relational, and neutrality. The lemon trees planted on the pagoda grounds make it more ancient and spiritual. Visitors can also pray for peace, and health and offer incense in front of the Guanyin altar.
