Special local items that the Mu Cang Chai Indigenous Homestay, Trek, and Food Tour made available for perspective are the items this region meant to present to the eye regarding such good food and traditional delicacies. These are items that make perfect souvenirs to bring back home, not only to remember your amazing adventure but also to share with your loved ones what Mu Cang Chai is made of. Let’s plunge into these plush delicacies not to miss
First on the list has to be Xoi Nep or sticky rice. This isn’t just your everyday sticky rice; more than that, it is a staple of the local diet and speaks much of the agricultural heritage of the region. Normally, sticky rice here is fragrant and full of flavor and is usually served with sesame seeds, peanuts, or even coconut. It’s a must-try and a fine gift to bring home
Next would be Com Tu Le or green rice. Being a specialty, it is young rice grains that are harvested and roasted when still green and later flattened. The result is something chewy with a slightly sweet treat enjoyed as a snack or dessert. Com Tu Le is a much-celebrated delicacy in the region and brands unique and tasty souvenirs
The famous must-take-home is Lap Xuong, which means smoked sausage. It’s usually made from pork, spiced with various varieties of spices cultivated in the land, then smoked to perfection. They are savory in taste and often served with meals or eaten as a snack on their own. Bring home some Lap Xuong and enjoy Mu Cang Chai, long after your trips from this lovely place
Another local specialty is the Tao Meo, which means wild apples. One uses small apple varieties for making quite tasty and healthy apple wine. Locals find that Tao Meo assists in digestion, improves circulation, and much more. You can take a few dried wild apples or a bottle of Tao Meo wine home to share a small piece from Mu Cang Chai‘s nature.
These forests are full of wild bees; the honey is very pure and fragrant. Especially in Mu Cang Chai, it has good quality and rude taste. Apart from that, the larvae of these bees are seen as a local delicacy and are often deep-fried or added to other dishes. Bringing home a jar of this exquisite honey would sweetly remind one of your trip
Finally, don’t forget to stock up on the vast range of local herbs and spices that give Mu Cang Chai‘s basic staples their unique flavors. Fragrant star anise and cinnamon to unique local blends in use with classic traditional local dishes would interest any home cook needing to recreate the taste of Mu Cang Chai.
Each of these specialties gives a taste of Mu Cang Chai‘s rich culinary heritage. Having been your guide on this tour in the Mu Cang Chai Indigenous Homestay, Trek, and Food Tour, I would recommend some of these items for you to take home and share with family or friends as gifts or memorabilia. These will remind one of the great times on the adventures, but there’s also something very culturally different and gastronomically special about this beautiful place.
