We set off early in the morning, and I met the family at their hotel in Hanoi. It was a very exciting group, getting into our private van to start the ride to breathtakingly beautiful Ninh Binh Province, two hours away from Hanoi. En route, I briefed them about the unique geography of the region and how important it was as a cultural and historical hub in Vietnam.
9:30 AM – Discovering Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
The first stop was the legendary Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, deeply in over a thousand years of history; the kids listened wide-eyed as I told stories about King Dinh Tien Hoang and heroic warriors fighting on this ground. We have managed to walk into the ancient temple dedicated to their kings, having been impressed by the complicated engravings when learning about Vietnam’s first city.
10:30 AM – Scenic Boat Ride in Tam Coc
Then we headed to Tam Coc, where we took a native sampan boat-the traditional way, even putting us asleep as the boats moved up and down in the emerald-green Ngo Dong River, with towering limestone karst and endless rice paddies framing the journey.
12:30 PM – Lunch at a Local Restaurant
We had lunch at a cozy restaurant near Tam Coc. The spread was a plethora of Vietnamese delicacies, from grilled chicken down to spring rolls and fried rice, with some children-friendly dishes to please everyone’s taste buds.
2:00 PM – Climbing Hang Mua for Panoramic Views
After lunch, our next destination would be the amazing Hang Mua, which 500 steps leading up was an adventure this family was raring to embark upon. The ascent was quite easily doable; we stopped frequently to take in the great landscape along the way. Right at the summit, one gets a wide vista of Tam Coc’s majestic landscape-an ideal shot.
5:00 PM – Check-in and Relax
As the day wore off, we were taken to a homely family-oriented homestay literally in the countryside. Children enjoyed the open spaces while the parents loved the serene surroundings of the home. After dinner, home-cooked and finger-licking, everybody called it a night for the next day’s adventures.

It has been referred to as the “Bay Without Waves"; not much or little action is going on in Van Long Nature Reserve. We opted for small boats and started our journey with tremendous ease through waters that were calm like glass.

We stopped on the way and had lunch in another quaint restaurant before continuing. The spring rolls were crispy, while succulent pork dishes were fresher than you could imagine, full of local delights.
1:30 PM – Bird-Watching at Thung Nham Bird Garden
The most amazing sight came in the afternoon when we went to the rich natural park called Thung Nham Bird Garden.
4:00 PM – Scenic Return to Hanoi
As the sun began to set, we started to drive back to Hanoi. The family reflected on the highlights of their trip, from historical discoveries to unforgettable wildlife encounters.
