Overview of the 2-Day Hiking Tour Itinerary

Our Hiking Mai Chau is a 2-day journey that takes you into the beautiful Mai Chau valley in Hoa Binh province. Imagine yourself walking past golden rice terraces, beneath stands of towering bamboo, and finding surprises like Pung Waterfall and the silvery curves of Thung Khe Pass. This trail is about more than the sights; it’s about connecting with the land and the stories the land holds. Whether you’re walking over woodsy bridges or seeing old-fashioned water wheels turn, the path is full of moments of delight and discovery. This is one of the top Mai Chau treks for nature and authenticity lovers.

But what truly sets this Mai Chau Hiking Tour apart is the cultural depth. Along the way, you’ll explore peaceful local villages like Pom Coong, Mai Ha, and Ban Buoc, where the ethnic minority communities, especially the Thai people, open their homes and hearts to visitors. At night, you’ll enjoy dinner and a warm bed in a traditional stilt-house homestay, followed by lively dances and local wine under the stars. It’s the greatest nature-to-hospitality combination. To experience the real thing off the tourist trail, we invite you to take the Mai Chau Vietnam Tour or go whole hog with Mai Chau Tours 2 Days to hike this valley the way it was meant to be discovered, one step at a time.

2-Day Hiking Mai Chau Itinerary: Explore the Valley Trail by Trail

Day 1 – Scenic Trails & Cultural Encounters

07:00 – Depart from Hanoi
We leave the capital city, traveling west into Hoa Binh province. Relax and enjoy the ride as we travel along rural countryside roads and eventually to the hills of northern Vietnam.

09:30 – Scenic stop at Thung Khe Pass
Welcome to one of the most photographed locations in Vietnam! Thung Khe Pass (“White Stone Pass") is usually covered in mist, and the vistas from the summit over the Mai Chau valley are spectacular. Grab a snack on popcorn corn and take your first great shot.

11:00 – Arrival at Pom Coong Village
Time to break out the hiking boots! Our first trek begins in Pom Coong, a peaceful village with stilted homes and waterwheels. Pom Coong is ideal for easy Mai Chau treks through peaceful rice paddies and handicraft villages. Look forward to seeing warm locals working on brocade by hand and learning the story of the Thai ethnic culture.

11:00 – 12:30 – Trek Pom Coong → Mai Ha → Te Village
A short-to-medium trek (circa 4–5 km) that takes us down serene trails through the villages, bamboo groves, and stunning rice paddies. A dip into daily life: farmers in the fields, buffalo resting in the shade, and children waving from doorways.

12:30 – 13:30 – Lunch in Ban Buoc Village
Rest your legs in Ban Buoc, a charming Thai village. Gourmet foods like grilled hill chicken, bamboo tube-steamed sticky rice ( Com lam), and forest pickled vegetables are here. Local food, local culture!

13:30 – 16:00 – Trekking from Ban Buoc to Mai Hich Village
Get ready for one of the highlights of our Mai Chau trek. The trek (~5 km) features easy hills, breathtaking views, and easy trails through orchards and woodland edges. Here, Hiking Mai Chau is most isolated and distinctive.

16:00 – 17:00 – Check-in at homestay in Mai Hich
Welcome to your wooden Thai house! Sitting in the valley and amidst the greenery, your homestay offers the perfect place to relax after a day of trekking.

18:30 – Dinner & Cultural Night
Let the music begin! You’ll dine on regional specialties before joining a traditional ethnic minority dance performance. Participate in the joyful bamboo dance, try the local rice wine ( ruou can), and share stories under the stars. It’s the true spirit of Mai Chau, Vietnam.

Day 2 – Jungle Trail & Waterfall Wonders

07:00 – Breakfast at the homestay
Start your day with fresh local pancakes, sticky rice, and warm herbal tea. The climate in the mountains makes each bite taste even better.

08:00 – 10:00 – Trek to Pung Waterfall (Thac Pung)
We hike along hidden jungle paths to reach the Pung Waterfall, a local secret that is savored by few. The 2km trail has forest, rocky terrain, and is guided by our experienced local guide. The sound of flowing water grows louder with every step, and then, it is! A beautiful cascade where you may stop for a breather, wash your feet, and soak it all in.

10:00 – 11:30 – Return via alternate forest trail to Ban Ngoa and Ban Den
This lovely loop brings us back through less-touristed local villages and gives us a peek into the everyday life of the minority peoples. Don’t forget to ask your guide what herbal plants and natural remedies are still utilized here.

12:00 – 13:00 – Lunch picnic by the stream
Eat riverside on sticky rice, grilled pork satay, and seasonal fresh fruits — the final refueling before departing.

13:30 – Depart for Hanoi
We say goodbye to our generous hosts and embark on the easy trip back to the city, appreciating the final sightseeing of Mai Chau valley as we depart.

17:00 – 17:30 – Arrive in Hanoi

When is the Best Time for Hiking in Mai Chau?

To be able to gain a full appreciation of the beauty of Hiking Mai Chau, the appropriate season should be selected. The best time for a Mai Chau Hiking Tour is during two ideal seasons: April to June and September to November. These seasons offer the ideal weather for walking along the trails, enjoying nature, and connecting with the lives of the inhabitants.

  • April to June is warm and dry with ample sunshine. This is when the valley is full of new greenery. You will hike through newly planted rice paddy fields, colorful flowers, and peaceful bamboo groves. It is also the beginning of the agricultural season, so you can see local villages full of traditional activity, perfect for experiential trekking holidays.
  • From September to November, the entire Mai Chau valley turns golden as the rice terraces ripen. This is harvest time, the most photogenic time! The weather is mild, the views at Thung Khe Pass are breathtaking, and the local villages often celebrate with festivals, traditional cuisine, and music. If you’re a photographer, have an interest in culture, or simply want the best scenery on your Mai Chau hikes, this is the best time to go.

Expert Hiking Tips: Safety, Gear & Cultural Respect

What to Pack for Hiking Mai Chau

When you take a Hiking Mai Chau tour, there are certain gear you should bring along. Here’s what to bring for a safe and enjoyable journey:

  • Trekking shoes with good traction (for muddy or rocky terrain in the middle of rice terraces and bamboo forests).
  • Light, breathable attire.
  • Hat, sunscreen, and bug spray.
  • A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Raincoat or poncho (weather in the mountains changes quickly).
  • Small daypack with snacks, first aid kit, and extra socks.

Whether you are walking around Pom Coong or trekking around the neighboring Pu Luong Nature Reserve, being prepared means more comfort and more time to appreciate the natural beauty of the Mai Chau valley.

How to Respect Local Culture While Hiking

A lot of the trek on your Mai Chau Hiking Tour is spent on small walking paths, through ethnic minority villages. You’re respectful, and you care to make a connection.

  • Always ask before photographing local people.
  • Try basic Vietnamese greetings such as “Chao” (hello) and “Cam on” (thank you).
  • Do not give children money or candy; instead, bring thoughtful presents like school supplies if you feel the need.
  • Be respectful of homes and places of worship.

Why You Should Hire a Local Guide

A community interpreter is more than just a pathfinder,  and becomes your magic to help the trekkers understand the spirit of Mai Chau’s trekking. Here’s why:

  • They teach you how to talk respectfully to villagers.
