Why Bird Coffee is a Must-Visit Spot in Ho Chi Minh City?
Allow me to introduce you to probably one of the most unique and loved experiences in Saigon: Bird Coffee Ho Chi Minh! It is not just another coffee shop but a slice of life, locals, alive, taking in the very essence of Vietnamese coffee culture is both charming and unforgettable. Tucked right in the heart of the city, Bird Coffee has grown to become one of the favorite meeting places for locals, and once you step inside, you’ll see straight away why it is included in the tour repertoire of any Ho Chi Minh City Tour.
History of Bird Coffee
Bird Coffee Ho Chi Minh finds its origin in very favorable conditions when people of the town love the simplest things in their lives: good, strong coffee and the merry chirping of birds. From a casual meeting point for bird enthusiasts, the place grew into a certain cultural phenomenon. You can witness all classes of people- from businessmen to retirees- bringing along their prized birds in cages, setting them up, and having their cup of coffee as their feathered companions sing early in the morning. The tradition has grown over the years, making Bird Coffee not just a café, but a living testament to the locals’ love for nature and connection.
Unique Atmosphere
Imagine an oasis of green right at the heart of town, where everywhere melodious sweet sounds of birds singing welcome the ears. Well, welcome to Bird Coffee Ho Chi Minh! The cafe is lined with bird cages hanging from the trees down around the seating areas, each home to beautifully kept songbirds. The ambiance is a soothing mix of nature and urban life; refreshing, to say the least, from the hustle and bustle of the streets of Saigon. There’s nothing like sitting down with a hot cup of Vietnamese coffee as the birds chirp their cheerful songs. It’s serene and peaceful an experience that makes one feel part of a secret and delightful ritual known only to the locals.
Cultural Insight
Bird Coffee is so much more than a place you go to when you urgently need to inject caffeine; it’s a window into the communal spirit of Saigon. You will get to witness precisely how the locals bond over interests and simple pleasures. The atmosphere is a nice blend of traditional Vietnamese coffee culture, which values moments of slow connection, and communitarian gladness of bird-keeping hobby passed down from generation to generation.
The unhurried pace of the café, and the amiable interchange among its patrons, wraps one in the heart of local culture. Be it discussing a bird owner’s favorite pet or simply basking in the atmosphere, you feel deeply connected to the vibrant tapestry of life that defines Ho Chi Minh City. What makes Bird Coffee Ho Chi Minh a place that one needs to visit is not particularly the coffee, but the experience, the people, and the songbirds that make it special.
Therefore, while you’re planning your Ho Chi Minh Tours, make sure that time is carved out for a visit to Bird Coffee. Much more than just a cafe, it’s a living tradition, such a place of gathering, and that specific and evocative snap of Saigon’s unique culture which you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Come see for yourself why this little corner of town is so special to so many!
Detailed Itinerary: Wake Up to Morning Exercise and Bird Coffee in Ho Chi Minh City
6:00 am – Start Your Day at Tao Dan Park
Tao Dan Park
Our tour will start at 6:00 am we visit the beautiful and serene Tao Dan Park in Saigon, where locals among others come to get their day started with morning exercise from the slow motion acupressure positions of Tai Chi to much more dynamic exercises-jogging, badminton, even dancing. You can participate in or observe these exercises, and experience the energy and camaraderie that defines the morning rhythm in Ho Chi Minh City.
7:00 am – Cross to Bird Coffee
After taking in most of the pulsating life of the park, we will be crossing the busy street over to quaint Bird Coffee. But this is no ordinary café: it’s a well-loved hangout place among locals and is filled with songbirds chirping away. Think about sipping strong and aromatic Vietnamese coffee amidst dozens of cages each housing a beautiful songbird. It is a quiet, surreal experience, melding nature with convention, and affording a glimpse into one of Saigon’s best-loved rituals.
7:30 am – Enjoy a Local Breakfast
No morning is complete without breakfast, and having had our coffee stop out of the way, we delve into some local delicacies that set us up for the remainder of the tour. We’ll make a stop at a nearby eatery, where you can have bánh mì a crispy baguette filled with savory meats and fresh herbs-or a warm bowl of phở, Vietnam’s iconic noodle soup. This is not just a breakfast stop but having a taste of the morning buzz in a typical Saigon street-side eatery.
8:30 am – Visit the War Remnant Museum
The next drive will be to the War Remnant Museum one of the most important war museums in Vietnam. It gives a strong look into what war has given this country in terms of life through powerful photographs, war remnants, and personal stories dating from the era of the Vietnam War. By taking a view through the exhibits, much can be learned about Vietnam’s past, its ability to fight back, and the exact implications the war had on this country’s citizens.
9:30 am – Explore Independence Palace (Dinh Độc Lập)
Then, we’ll visit the Historical Independence Palace Dinh Độc Lập. This is the representation of victory and unity that Vietnam as a whole nation has gained. This is where, on April 30th, 1975, the war in Vietnam ended with tanks storming its gates. Relive the moments of yesteryear as you pass through the grand halls, war rooms, and secret bunkers filling the palace, as stories of the crucial moments that took place herein are being told in your ears.

The imposing structure shows the proud marriage of European architecture with traditional Vietnamese grace: intricate ironwork, vaulted ceilings, and exquisitely worked tile floors. It’s an astonishing relic that still reflects colonial times.
10:50 am – Stop by Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon
Just across from the post office is Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, an attractive architectural and religious icon of the city. To this day, it remains a place of great importance for worship and one of the many testament to Ho Chi Minh City’s rich history and heritage.
11:15 am – Stroll Down Dong Khoi Street
From there, we continue the leisurely walk along Dong Khoi Street, earlier known under its French colonial name as La Rue Catinat. HO CHI MINH CITY TOUR AND CU CHI TUNNELS

The Reunification Palace: Here on April 30th, 1975 the Vietnam War officially ended when tank number 843 of the North Vietnamese Army crashed through the gates of what was, at the time the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam.
War Remnants Museum: Formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes, this is a poignant display of the futility of war. Some of the black and white photography in the ‘Requiem’ exhibit is particularly touching, dedicated to both foreign and Vietnamese journalists and photographers who perished during the conflict. The courtyard outside contains the spoils of war, namely rusting jets, tanks and cannons captured from the American military machine.
Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office: Built between 1877 and 1883 this is one of the best examples of classical French colonial architecture. Remarkably every stone used in its creation was shipped from France to Vietnam. Her two 40m towers, topped with iron spires dominate the city’s skyline. The Old Post Office is another example of French colonial architecture and is also the country’s largest post office.
Jade Emperor Pagoda: Building in 1909 in honor of the supreme Taoist god, this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in HCMC, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings.
Cu Chi Tunnels: Watch a short introductory video showing how they were constructed, then spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels. Also, on display are various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters made by 500 pound bombs dropped by B52 bombers. For those interested there’s even the opportunity to fire off rounds from an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range
