Where is Hang Bong Street?
Hang Bong Street in Hanoi
Situated in the center of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Hang Bong Street is a busy and energetic road spanning around 1.2 km from Hang Gai Street to the junction of Cua Nam Street. One of the main arteries in Hanoi’s historic center, it is conveniently located and connected to other important sites and districts, therefore making it a must-see location for visitors looking around the city. From its first stage, Hang Bong Street, belonging to Hanoi Old Quarter, has spanned one of the longest histories. Like many of its surrounding streets, its name reflects both generally sold crafts locally and significant employment taken by the local people. It is lucky that the street, whose overall size exceeds others in the town, draws more and more visitors each year.
Passing through major streets in the ancient town, including Hang Gai Street, Hang Trong Street, etc., Hang Bong Street runs from Hang Bong intersection to Cua Nam Gate. The street used to be a collection of little lanes and villages focused on traditional goods. Hang Hai Street connecting Hang Gai and Hang Manh was well-known for paper-made goods including shoes, caps, presents, and so on. Mostly cotton blankets and mattresses pick this section. People frequently visit the site to bring some kinds of dyed clothing home. Should there be contests for craft diversity, this historic street would rightfully receive first prize.
The History of Hang Bong Street
Hang Bong Street in 1945
Translating as “Cotton Street," Hang Bong Street boasts a rich past going back to the 15th century. Originally, it was a hub for tailors and cotton traders developing and marketing a range of textile goods. The street changed throughout ages and now serves a broad spectrum of fabric and fashion-related companies. Notwithstanding the developments, Hang Bong has kept its classic appeal and is a major centre for the textile sector in Hanoi. An old street spanning roughly 932 metres from the crossroad Hàng Bông – Hàng Gai – Hàng Trong – Hàng Hom to the former city entrance Cửa Nam (South entrance), French: Rue du Coton. Originally inhabited by cotton dealers and manufacturers of apparel and winter blankets (thus the name), today’s Hàng Bông is one of the busiest shopping avenues in Hanoi, lined with art galleries, silk and clothing stores.
Old Hang Bong Street also housed a lot of print houses, bookstores, and reporters during the French era. Notable for several traffic incidents involving trams (before to 1991), Hang Bong Street, since the turn of the twenty-first century, has been progressively linked with luxury fashion, mostly surpassing the competing destinations of Hang Dao, Luong Van Can and Tran Nhan Tong streets. Today, this street also hosts the elegant Silk Path hotel, formerly the music tea rooms, a common destination for musicians and other creative persons.
Particularly because of the cheap fried and grilled spring rolls offered on the intersection of Hang Bong junction and Tam Thuong alley, Hang Bong Street is a popular gathering place for children and students at night. On the right-hand (even-numbered) side of the street at its terminus is a pastry bakery somewhat well-known among travelers. This street is also bursting with flag and T-shirt vendors on celebratory events.
What is Hang Bong Street Well-Known For?
Souvenirs at Hang Bong street
The great range of fabrics and fashion accessories found on Hang Bong Street is well-known. For designers, fashionistas, and everyone else fascinated in fabrics, it is a utopia. From traditional Vietnamese silks and cottons to modern fabrics, the boulevard is dotted with several stores and boutiques providing a varied spectrum of materials. Hang Bong’s tailors and seamstresses are renowned for their workmanship; they create bespoke clothes and adjustments to fit personal preferences.
Apart from fabrics and fashion, Hang Bong Street is well-known for its antique stores, art galleries, and souvenir shops, so it’s ideal for consumers searching for unusual and unforgettable objects.

Fried spring rolls are a favorite snack of many people. Especially young people. Fried spring rolls are also considered an outstanding delicious gift that can be enjoyed on many streets in Hanoi. When talking about the capital’s cuisine, we must definitely mention fried spring rolls. Fried spring rolls on Hang Bong street always have a unique flavor that attracts people to enjoy. The spring rolls have been brewed to a certain degree, not causing sour taste and ensuring deliciousness. The spring rolls will then be coated with a layer of fried dough. Fry evenly in an oil pan to a beautiful golden brown color.
Each visitor will sit huddled on plastic chairs. The shop owners here are also very loved by customers because of their always welcoming attitude, enthusiastic and quick service.
After the fried spring rolls are finished, they will be placed on a tray, followed by plates containing side dishes. The most popular dish is still jicama, green mango, and cucumber. Everything is neatly arranged on the tray. Spring rolls skewered on bamboo sticks add more appeal to the dish, attracting people to enjoy it.
To balance the fatty and aromatic taste of spring rolls, chili sauce is an indispensable spice. Chili sauce and side dishes combined with spring rolls bring a very special flavor to the dish. The food tray is eye-catching with the yellow-brown color of the spring roll shell, the peachy pink color inside the spring rolls, and the green of cucumbers, white jicama and red orange from the chili sauce.
