Cu Vai Village in Tram Tau – The Enchanting “Cloud Village"

Introduction to Cu Vai Village

Located in Tram Tau District, Yen Bai Province, Cu Vai village is a hard-to-find treasure. Located at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, this remote H’Mong village is one of the most unique stops in the Mu Cang Chai tours visit Cu Vai. What does “Cu Vai” mean? The word “Cu Vai” means “Rattan Rope Across the Sky”, and its meaning perfectly describes its shape floating on the clouds.

Unlike many other highland villages, Cu Vai Village was founded in 2013 as part of a resettlement project, bringing H’Mong families together into a close-knit, sustainable community. Today, it is a peaceful retreat, with traditional wooden houses lining a perfectly straight road, and life hums along in harmony with nature. Those participating in Mu Cang Chai Tours will enjoy a unique experience of the purity of the highland culture and standing on the cloud.

What Makes Cu Vai Village Special?

Just a foot into Cu Vai Village, and you’ll know why it is one of the most captivating places in Northern Vietnam. This is not just a place to visit, but an experience that will leave you awestruck. Being here in this beautiful place feels like a dream full of nature culture and tranquillity.

360-Degree Panoramic Views of Rolling Mountains and Deep Valleys

You can even wake up to see clouds trekking through the village and endless views of towering mountains for as long as you can see. The scenery changes throughout the day mornings are cloaked in mist, afternoons expose the deep valleys, and sunsets drape golden light over the hills. Whether you’re admiring the scenery from a homestay porch or hiking to a nearby viewpoint, each angle is a postcard-ready picture.

A Peaceful, Untouched Paradise Free from Urban Noise

The immensity of tourists has not stepped foot in the Cu Vai Village, as in the tourist areas. No throngs of noisy people, no sidewalks teeming with traffic only the gentle sounds of nature. Here, you can detach from modern distractions and reconnect with the simple rhythms of mountain life. Mayong village is one of the best places to stay for calm, meditation, and respite from external global challenges.

The “Runway Road” – A Straight Path Through the Village

The straight central road located in Cu Vai Village is also known as the “Runway Road" and is one of the most unique features of Cu Vai Village. And unlike the winding roads of other mountain hamlets, this straight-as-an-arrow path slices through the heart of the village presenting itself as a sort of suspended airstrip in the clouds. Such a specific layout makes Cu Vai Village an unforgettable beauty of the highland destination.

Authentic H’Mong Culture, Preserved for Generations

Cu Vai Village is home to the H’Mong, an ethnic group that’s preserving a lifestyle that dates back centuries and giving visitors a unique insight into true H’Mong customs and culture. Here, you won’t just see the way of life you’ll live it:

  • Learn about traditional long houses and wooden stilt homes where H’Mong families huddle around warm fires.
  • See artisans create ornate textiles, making colorful fabrics from hand-dyed threads.
  • Learn local agricultural practices, from rice planting to crop harvesting on steep mountains.
  • Taste native H’Mong specialties, including smoked buffalo, wild herbs, and bamboo-cooked sticky rice.
Trek golden rice terraces, experience H’Mong culture, and stay above the clouds

Tour Itinerary – 3 or 4 Days Exploring Mu Cang Chai & Cu Vai Village

Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo – Tram Tau Hot Spring

6:30 AM – Departure from Hanoi

Rise and shine! At 6:30 AM, the van will be at your facility in Hanoi’s old quarter, then after a quick briefing, we embark on the mountains. The trip to Nghia Lo takes approximately 5 hours, but don’t be worried, this is not simply a drive; it’s a scenic experience in itself.

With the bustling city behind us, the terrain starts to change. Before long, we’re encased in an infinite sea of tea plantations, greens so vivid they almost sparkle in the morning sunlight. Have your camera on hand as we make a brief stop at a tea farm to stretch our legs and take some stunning shots of the mist-blanketed hills in the distance.

12:00 PM – Lunch in Nghia Lo

After a meandering drive through the beautiful countryside, we arrive in Nghia Lo, a bustling market town occupied by the Thai and H’Mong ethnic groups. We’ll feast on a traditional Northern Vietnamese meal at Suoi Giang Restaurant grilled mountain fish, sticky rice wrapped in bamboo, and fresh forest vegetables.

2:00 PM – Relax at Tram Tau Hot Springs

After lunch, we set off on our 1-hour journey to Tram Tau Hot Springs. Finally, this is as good as it gets sipping your way through mineral-rich hot springs surrounded by misty mountains, with the sounds of nature as your soothing soundtrack. Not to mention, the water is warm, the air is fresh and, believe me, it’s the perfect way to relax one last time before heading off on our highland adventure.

5:30 PM – Check-in at Tram Tau Ecolodge

As the sun starts to set, we check in at Tram Tau Ecolodge, a small, 4-star property nestled in the hills. Unwind for a few hours, inhale the crisp mountain air, and take in the amazing sunset views from your wooden bungalow.

7:00 PM – Dinner with Highland Flavors

Dinner this evening revolves around highland flavors: grilled pork marinated in mountain herbs; bamboo-cooked rice; and a steaming hotpot of local vegetables. It’s a refreshment for not just the body, but the spirit, serving as an excellent foundation for the wondrous trip to come.

6:00 AM – Sunrise and Breakfast at the Lodge

Wake up early to see the sunrise over the foggy hills a sight so surreal, it feels like a dream. By 7:00 AM, after breakfast and packing up, we will depart for one of Vietnam’s most remote and beautiful villages, Cu Vai Village.

8:30 AM – The Road to Cu Vai

It takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach Cu Vai Village and I have to tell you this is one of the most beautiful drives in your life. We climb toward the mountains and clouds begin rolling in a dream world. The air is cool and crisp, the views are endless, and at times it feels as if we’re journeying through a land untouched by time.

10:00 AM – Welcome to the Cloud Village

And there it is Cu Vai Village, hovering on the clouds, like a fairy tale scene. The moment we step out, you will understand what the identity of this place is, no traffic, no noise, only whispers of wind, and the momentum of the H’Mong villagers.

We first take a walk around the village with a local guide, passing traditional H’Mong wooden houses. The perfectly straight path running through the village, called the “Runway Road” by locals, rates more magic points making it resemble an airstrip in the sky.

12:00 PM – Lunch with a Local Family

Now, let’s talk about food! Mua A Ly’s family hosts lunch today, and it’s a real H’Mong feast: smoked buffalo, mountain greens, sticky rice, and a piping hot bowl of herbal soup. Sitting on a wooden floor, swapping stories with our hosts, you will feel the warmth of this highland community.

2:00 PM – Exploring Cu Vai’s Culture and Landscape

After lunch, we go on a visit to Cu Vai Village, where we also meet some locals who weave intricate designs into their textiles. You may even have the opportunity to practice traditional weaving!

As the sun starts to dip, we find a cozy nook at the edge of a valley, where golden hour at its finest cascades the rolling hills in amber and deep blue.

7:00 PM – H’Mong Cultural Night

Tonight’s accommodation is Mua A Cho Homestay a wooden house with a fireplace to keep us warm. Dinner is yet another home-cooked treat, then an evening of traditional H’Mong songs, folklore, and storytelling by candlelight.
