Welcome to the pulse of Ho Chi Minh City! Vietnam is rich in cultural tradition, representing a tapestry of diverse influences and heritage. One feels that while walking around in the city, Vietnamese culture has very strong historical roots where Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism occupy a big space. The people in Vietnam are warm, hospitable, and very attached to their elders and customs.
Festivals, arguably the most interesting facts about Vietnamese culture, involve the Lunar New Year—Tet—very significant to be celebrated with reunions, festive food, and a bunch of rituals. Other ones include the Mid-Autumn Festival and Hue Festival, which gave the city its effervescent feel.
Key Cultural Norms and Practices
Knowing local customs can massively help enhance your experience. Listed here are a few key cultural norms for a Muslim when taking Halal food and tours while visiting Ho Chi Minh City:
Respect for Elders: The Vietnamese respect their elders. It is always best to greet the oldest person first and use respectful language.
Public Behavior: The Vietnamese culture is modest and discreet. There is hardly any public display of affection, and cool and calm behavior is highly regarded
Dress Code: Ho Chi Minh City is reasonably modern, but dressing modestly is still essential, especially upon visiting religious places. It’s best to cover your shoulders and knees.
Shoes Off: Most homes and some temples may expect you to remove your shoes before entry. Watch for signs, or do what the locals do.
Etiquette for Mosque Visits
Dress Code and Behavior Guidelines
Visiting Mosques accomplishes the beautiful deed of connecting with the local Muslim community and understanding them in their worship practices. Here’s how to ensure your visit is both respectful and enjoyable:
Dress Modestly: Men are to wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves. Ladies are to cover their hair with a scarf and wear long skirts or pants and tops with long sleeves.
Shoes Off:Take off your shoes whenever you enter the mosque. There will usually be a place to leave them
Quiet and Respectful: Be quiet and show respect to the Mosque while visiting. No loud talking or other types of disruptive noise are allowed in a mosque.
No Photography: Unless explicitly allowed, avoid taking photographs inside the mosque, especially during prayer times.
Tips for Respectful Engagement
Ask for Permission: Your efforts at showing respect toward the local customs will be appreciated by the community.
Participate with Respect: If invited to participate in any activities or prayers, do it with much respect
Learn and Engage: This is your chance to understand how the local Muslim community lives and works. A respectful conversation can be extremely enriching

The Reunification Palace: Here on April 30th, 1975 the Vietnam War officially ended when tank number 843 of the North Vietnamese Army crashed through the gates of what was, at the time the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam.
War Remnants Museum: Formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes, this is a poignant display of the futility of war. Some of the black and white photography in the ‘Requiem’ exhibit is particularly touching, dedicated to both foreign and Vietnamese journalists and photographers who perished during the conflict. The courtyard outside contains the spoils of war, namely rusting jets, tanks and cannons captured from the American military machine.
Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office: Built between 1877 and 1883 this is one of the best examples of classical French colonial architecture. Remarkably every stone used in its creation was shipped from France to Vietnam. Her two 40m towers, topped with iron spires dominate the city’s skyline. The Old Post Office is another example of French colonial architecture and is also the country’s largest post office.
Jade Emperor Pagoda: Building in 1909 in honor of the supreme Taoist god, this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in HCMC, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings.
Cu Chi Tunnels: Watch a short introductory video showing how they were constructed, then spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels. Also, on display are various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters made by 500 pound bombs dropped by B52 bombers. For those interested there’s even the opportunity to fire off rounds from an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range
