Nguyen Van Binh Street

The transformation of Nguyen Van Binh Street into the lively Ho Chi Minh City Book Street is nothing short of inspiring. From being a quiet street nestled in District 1, it has turned into a bustling haven for readers. Officially launched in 2016, it quickly became yet another must-visit attraction, capturing the hearts of locals and international tourists alike. Going along this charming street, there are 20 stalls displaying major Vietnamese publishers like Kim Đong, Alphabooks, and Nha Nam, and some international literature.

It’s amazing; one can get just about any type of book-classical literature, historical works, children’s books, or self-development titles. Anything one might need or want can be found here in Ho Chi Minh City Book Street: from rare Vietnamese poetry collections to the latest international bestsellers. Just perfect to disappear into the world of books!

Other Notable Book Streets in Ho Chi Minh City

While Nguyen Van Binh Street is the showpiece, Ho Chi Minh City has other lively book streets. For example, Tran Nhan Ton Street in District 5 is highly reputed for its accumulation of old, rare books perfect for antique book hunters. Meanwhile, Tran Huy Lieu Street in Phu Nhuan District has been associated with discounted books, so this place is a popular stop among students and budget readers.

What with a peaceful, reader-friendly atmosphere, Ho Chi Minh City Book Street is a new breed of street different from other busy ones. It’s like a little oasis in the big city where nature, tranquility, and intellectual stimulation blend. It’s no surprise that it is one of the tourist’s favorite destinations on Ho Chi Minh Tours when they want to enjoy a relaxing and enriching experience.

Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City Book Street

Notre-Dame Cathedral

After dessert and coffee, the tour shifts into high gear with not one but two of Ho Chi Minh City’s most recognizable buildings: the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office.

  • Notre-Dame Cathedral: This is the most impressive example of 19th-century French colonial architecture, one of the most photographed sites around the city. The guide will demonstrate how in Vietnam, literary and religious history has intersected, and you will understand the cultural landscape further.
  • Central Post Office: This grand building is within walking distance and took none other than Gustave Eiffel as its designer. The grand arches and ornate design make for a perfect photo opportunity, along with a quick lesson in how French and Vietnamese cultures have blended over time. You can almost imagine the letters and books once flowing through this beautiful hall as you walk through it, connecting people around the world.

Lunch at Pho Hien 1985 (12:15 – 1:00 PM)

Pho Hien 1985 in Ho Chi Minh City Book Street

Pho Hien 1985

By this time, your appetite must have been worked up, and what better way to refuel than to have a traditional meal in Vietnam at Pho Hien 1985? It is a highly recommended restaurant among the locals where bowls of hot phở are served right to satiate your taste buds.

A Vietnamese Culinary Experience: You will have the option to choose from delicious selections such as pho bo or chicken noodle soup, pho ga, and spring rolls. You’ll enjoy your meal along with interesting stories told by your guide about the role of phở within the history of Vietnam and frequent depictions in literature. It’s a brilliant way to join the dots between food and culture, showing how each forms part of the identity of Vietnam.

Afternoon Stroll at Book Street (1:15 – 2:00 PM)

After lunch, when adequately full, the tour traces its way back down Nguyen Van Binh Street for an ungenuinely relaxed drill of an afternoon saunter. This is your time to go in slow-mo: browse through more book stalls, take photos, or just simply sit on one of the benches and enjoy the quiet charm of this particular literary oasis.

  • You might even be able to catch, if you’re lucky, an on-street event of an author, a book signing, or some sort of workshop. Events like these add more dimensions to the way people engage in and appreciate the local literary scene.
  • Final moments of reflection: This is that part of the tour where everything is digested. Why is this going to be such a transformational experience? That’s because Ho Chi Minh City Book Street doesn’t give just books; it provides an insight into Vietnamese culture. • War Remnants Museum: Formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes, this is a poignant display of the futility of war. Some of the black and white photography in the ‘Requiem’ exhibit is particularly touching, dedicated to both foreign and Vietnamese journalists and photographers who perished during the conflict. The courtyard outside contains the spoils of war, namely rusting jets, tanks and cannons captured from the American military machine.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office: Built between 1877 and 1883 this is one of the best examples of classical French colonial architecture. Remarkably every stone used in its creation was shipped from France to Vietnam. Her two 40m towers, topped with iron spires dominate the city’s skyline. The Old Post Office is another example of French colonial architecture and is also the country’s largest post office.
  • Jade Emperor Pagoda: Building in 1909 in honor of the supreme Taoist god, this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in HCMC, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings.
  • Cu Chi Tunnels: Watch a short introductory video showing how they were constructed, then spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels. Also, on display are various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters made by 500 pound bombs dropped by B52 bombers. For those interested there’s even the opportunity to fire off rounds from an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range
