Discovering Han Market: A Shopper’s Paradise in Da Nang

Han Market is one of the most important attractions in Da Nang, both locally and touristically. Located in the heart of the city, it is not only a shopping venue but also a vibrant area where social and cultural activities take place. It is also an important element of local culture and tourism, providing insight into the daily lives of people in Danang. This is a must-visit place, whether on one of the many Danang Tours or just exploring on your own.

History of Han Market

Han Market

Han Market

The Han Market was born in the 1940s during the French colonial period. When it opened in the early 1940s, the French planned tactics involving trade and transit of goods. Hence, it was called Tourane Marché and had a large train system linked to the main station to encourage the development of the business sector. Over time, the market grew, and later, a number of Chinese and Vietnamese entrepreneurs launched stores ranging from food to traditional pharmacies.

Major repair work on the market was carried out in 1989, and it was almost equipped with a new face and features to turn into a modern commercial center with an area of 28,000 square meters. Two spacious floors — which speak volumes of economic transformation — today the majority of stalls are in Han Market, in Da Nang. This means that this building, along with ongoing reconstruction works, is a chronicle of the Han Market that has lasting significance for Danang’s commercial landscape and cultural life.

Location and accessibility

Han Market is conveniently located in Da Nang, 119 Tran Phu, Hai Chau District. It is located near the famous landmarks of the Han River Bridge and Dragon Bridge, making it easy to access. Means of access to the market are plentiful and diverse: by taxi, motorbike taxi, or public transport. For those living at beach resorts where the coast of Da Nang is, a taxi will cost around $5 one way.

How to Han Market: From Dragon Bridge, it is just 1.9 km away and a scenic 20-minute walk away. Just walk across the bridge, and turn right onto Bach Dang Street. Then turn left onto Nguyen Thai Hoc, and there you are at the lively entrance of Han Market.

Structure and layout

A corner inside the market

A corner inside the market

The large and clean area is some of the most appreciated facts about the market. The market is built on an area of 28,000 m2, with two floors with 576 booths and 36 booths. Fresh food, dry food and seafood are the dominant items on the first floor, while clothing, shoes and various types of accessories are mainly sold on the second floor. The layout of the market is logically set, so visitors will not find it difficult to find where to buy or ask about anything. Therefore, the layout of Han Market is very practical and friendly to all visitors.

A very colorful environment, combined with various varieties, makes Han Market a thrilling place to shop. Everything, from fresh produce and seafood to textiles and souvenirs, is available here. Wide alleys and matching signage are part of the market design that makes shopping a comfortable experience.

Shopping experience

What’s great about shopping at the Han market? One has a wide range of goods to choose from fresh produce and seafood at the market, dry food, unique clothing and souvenirs. Especially noteworthy are the famous fish sauce, Ly Son garlic, chili sauce. The local delicacies both taste great and serve well to give to friends and family.

Just a few things to keep in mind when shopping at the Han market: Bargaining is acceptable, and most prices are actually negotiable. However, it is highly suggested that the shopping is done at priced stalls to avoid too expensive items. The peak hours of the market are from 6:00 am to 11:00 am and after 4:00 pm. So plan your visit around this time to avoid the crowds and buy the freshest produce.

Culinary Delights

Various cuisine

Various cuisine

The market, Han Market, is just a foodie heaven with a lot of local dishes available. To enjoy the best of food here, one should try the Quang noodles, nem lui, or lemongrass grilled pork skewers, and many other vermicelli-based foods. The most loved among sweets by visitors include the che—sweet soups, juices, and light eats like mixed paper salad, and banh trang tron. The food at the market stalls has a sense that is Da Nang; this is the place to go if you want to try some of the best local foods. These are incredibly fair prices; in fact, most dishes go for less than 20,000 VND, meaning a stop here is very affordable for tourists.

Comparing Han Market and Con Market

The main difference is entirely up to your preference. Han Market is a great place to buy dry food, fish sauce and clothes, while Con Market is for street food and fresh produce. But they both look good their way, although the Korean market is better if you like everything in order around you, as it’s pretty well arranged. Moreover, a lot of visitors choose Han Market which can be explained by its central location and easy-going amenities that the market offers. Whether you are there looking for a nice souvenir or some local delicacies, or maybe just to feel the atmosphere of some unique shopping places, Han Market will give you a full impression of the truly bustling culture of Da Nang Market.
