Turn wind into electricity: Located about 20km from the center of Bac Lieu city, following Cao Van Lau road towards the sea, visitors will come to the “wind power field" or Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant (Bien Dong A hamlet, Vinh Trach Dong commune, the city of Bac Lieu). Bac Lieu Street). The concrete road 3m wide, runs for kilometers on the sea surface and then splits into two directions, leading visitors to the turbines like giant pinwheels slowly spinning in the wind.
Looking up from below, looking up at the turbines standing tall in front of the sea, few people know that this place used to be a long stretch of cork and mangrove forests. Below the road is a layer of cinder blocks arranged alternately, forming a “rock fence" to prevent the sea from encroaching, causing soil erosion. In the midst of the wind and the waves roaring day and night without stopping, the more and more aware of the smallness of man in front of nature. But nature had to submit to human intelligence, when wind – the “specialty" of Bac Lieu, was transformed into energy to serve life.
Starting in September 2010, up to now, the Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant project has completed 2 phases, and installed 62 turbine towers with a capacity of 16 – 83MW, on an area of 1,300ha, with a total investment of more than 5,217 billion copper. Each turbine pole has a diameter of 4m, a height of 80m, weighs more than 200 tons, made of stainless steel. The propeller is made of special plastic, 42m long, equipped with a self-folding system when there is a big storm. Officially connected to the national power grid from June 2013, the plant has contributed 1 billion kWh of electricity output so far. Phase 3 started from January 2018, adding 71 wind turbine towers. When completed, the plant will have 133 wind turbines, bringing the total capacity to 241.2MW. This is the largest wind power project in Vietnam to date and the first to be built on the continental shelf in Southeast Asia. By turning wind into electricity, the wind power industry has become one of the five pillars of socio-economic development of Bac Lieu province, affirming the special advantages of this land.
Attract customers with a difference: Not only contributing to the local socio-economic development, but Bac Lieu Wind Power Plant also contributes to promoting the exploitation of clean energy sources, protecting the environment, and is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. province guide. Before the time of the Covid-19 epidemic, the “wind power field" attracted about 200,000 visitors a year. Ms. Huynh Thi Bao Tram, a tourist from Can Tho said: “I was really surprised to see the majestic and poetic scenery like in European countries of the “wind power field" of Bac Lieu. Seeing the giant wind turbines with my own eyes, I feel proud and admire the will of those who have created this project. “Wind power field” has brought me many interesting emotions and experiences, completely different from other places I have been to.”
Seeing the possibility of developing this place into an attractive tourist destination, Bac Lieu province has combined the model of eco-tourism, forestry, and aquaculture. Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Information, Sports and Tourism of Bac Lieu province Thai Quoc Luu said: “This is a pioneering project in the field of renewable energy, combating climate change, and protecting protective forests. . In addition, the project also attracts a large number of tourists to visit, contributing to creating jobs and improving people’s lives, while promoting the socio-economic development of the locality. In 2019, this place was recognized as a typical tourist destination of the Mekong Delta. In order to exploit and promote the potential of this tourist destination, Bac Lieu has been calling for investors to build high-class resorts and entertainment services near the area of "wind power fields". It is time to build a tour in association with neighboring destinations such as Quan Am Phat Dai pagoda, ancient longan garden, Bac Lieu prince’s house… to increase the experience for visitors".
With its uniqueness and difference, the tourist destination “wind power field" has contributed to creating imprints for Bac Lieu, helping the province to get rid of the situation of duplicating products with other localities in the Mekong Delta. throughout the years.
