Overview:
Coming to Ba Be Lake, visitors can also explore and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of Puong Cave, which is a scenic relic recognized and ranked as a provincial-level relic of Bac Kan.
Location and formation of cave:
From Cho Ra town to Ba Be lake about 7km to Buoc Lom canoe wharf, visitors get off by motorboat or canoe down the Nang River about 3km to Puong Cave. Puong cave is a natural limestone cave located in the Phja Puong mountain range, Nang river flows through the cave with a length of 351m, and river water flows into the cave from the northeast, out to the southwest. The cave gate forms an arch of more than 60m high, with an average width of 277m, the depth of water in the cave is from 6-10m. Stepping into the cave, visitors will admire the beauty of stalactites and the residence of many species of bats and swallows. Puong cave is a typical landscape of geological tectonics of the karst region, with a harmonious natural combination of rivers, limestone mountains, flora, and fauna, which is both an object of geological and scientific research, the object for tourism exploitation.
Limestone mountain system:
In the area of Puong Cave in particular and Ba Be Lake in general, there is a humid tropical climate. The average temperature in the cave ranges from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. The cave is located in the ecological population of Ba Be Lake National Park, this is a primary forest cover on the limestone mountain system including 4 phyla of flora with 115 families and 416 species. In which, there are some precious wood species such as nails, flower slices, gnats, etc. Inside the cave are mainly moss species. Puong cave belongs to the primeval forest area, so it has favorable conditions for bats living in the cave, in addition, there are many species of birds, reptiles, and fish living around.
Story about cave:
Puong cave is associated with the legend, the story of Mr. Tai Ngao was handed down by the local people from generation to generation. The story says: “At that time, the Nang River, which originated from Phja En, flowed back to Vai village, but it was stopped by the Puong mountain range, the stagnant water flooded the whole village. Ngoc Hoang sent Mr. Tai Ngao (giant) down to chisel the mountain, releasing the evil water to save the people. Since then, the Puong Cave was formed, and the rocks that Mr. Tai Ngoo had cut into the mountain to throw behind created the Dau Dang waterfall today.
Name of Cave:
Puong cave has two adjacent caves, the upper cave is called the Upper cave in the local language called “Puong Tenh", and the lower cave is called “Puong Tau" or “Puong Nam" cave below. In the cave, there are 2 entrances up and down, in Puong Cave below, there is a combination of both the beautiful scenery of the river and the natural beauty of stalactites creating a magical attraction. Inside the cave, there is a stalactite like “Buddha" who is sitting on a throne relaxing, enjoying the scenery of the sky and the water. In Upper Cave, there are many stone shelves, stalactites forming fields, gardens, fish ponds, and breeding places, and local people call the fields “witches". Starting into the cave, we encounter the rock bands arranged in zones, each step like the terraced fields of the mountainous people. Above the ceiling are stalactites like mother’s milk dripping day and night. Inside the cave, there is also a water well, which looks like a luxuriant orchard.
