Tra Su is a cajuput forest and eco-tourism area established in 1983, covering nearly 850 hectares in Van Giao commune, Tinh Bien district. This is a typical flooded forest of the Hau River region, playing an important role in the water environment and regulating the climate of the entire Bay Nui region. The forest is also home to many precious species of animals and plants belonging to the special-use forest system of Vietnam.
Coming here, the most noticeable thing is that visitors will be immersed in nature, not only attracted by the green space with shady cajuput forests, but also in close contact with a series of rare birds and wild animals. This is a place developed to become a conservation area for many tropical biological classes living in the Southwest region.
Locals will use boats to take tourists deep into the cajuput forest. Sitting on the boat, you will see birds perched on the tree trunks, many types of lotus in many colors. If you like, visitors can ask the boatman to stop to feel the quiet space and record moments of nature.
Tra Su cajuput forest is the setting for the film Southern Forest Land by director Nguyen Quang Dung, which has just been released in Vietnam.
Visitors are often surprised to find that the flooding season is one of the prettiest times to visit Tra Su Forest and the Mekong Delta area. Every year from September to November, the Cajuput Forest looks lovely and fresh, covered with green mats of water lilies and elephant ear plants. Rowling’s trip to the magical and beautiful Tra Su during the flood season is something you shouldn’t miss.
On the other hand, Tra Su Cajuput Forest looks beautiful in the dry season, with many water lilies moving gently in the water, as if they are dancing to greet visitors. You can visit the forest every day from 6:00 to 9:00 am and from 2:00 to 7:00 pm. During these times, you can watch how the storks live and behave from the observation towers. This amazing picture shows what nature in Tra Su has for you on your fun and memorable trip.
Tra Su Melaleuca Forest is located nearly 100km from Long Xuyen city and about 30km from Chau Doc city. You can easily travel to visit this place by many different means of transport.
The bamboo bridge across Tra Su cajuput forest is recognized by the Vietnam Record Organization as the longest in Vietnam, with a total length of 10 km and a construction cost of over 10 billion VND. However, the bridge has only completed phase 1 and put into operation in early 2020 with a length of nearly 4 km. The inaugurated bridge section used over 500,000 bamboo trees of various types and a construction cost of over 5 billion VND. Phase 2 with a length of about 6 km is under construction.
The bamboo bridge is divided into 5 branches with resting huts at each branch. The deeper you go, the more beautiful the scenery on both sides of the bridge becomes, the space is quiet and cool. The bridge leads to the motorboat dock, where visitors can get on and off to change routes.
From the pier, visitors can choose a motorboat (tac rang) or a sampan. The motorboat will go faster and further. Visitors will experience a journey across the canals, running straight into the heart of the cajuput forest. Along the way, you can observe the locals harvesting cajuput honey from the tanks placed in the forest. This is an opportunity to relax, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and the lives of the people here.
Visiting the cajuput forest by motorboat or sampan is also an opportunity for visitors to take beautiful photos amidst the green space, with duckweed covering the water surface. If you are lucky enough to go on a sunny day, the sunlight shining through the tree canopy will create a magical space.
If you want to have a more comprehensive view of the Melaleuca forest, you should visit the observation tower and use the telescope. With a view of 25 km, you can see the entire Melaleuca forest, the birds flying around, or nesting in the treetops. From here, you can also see the Khmer village a few kilometers away.
Right near the entrance, from the main ticket office area, across the Tra Su canal, visitors can see the pigeon houses. There are about 400 birds raised in the forest, so it is called “Pigeon City". The bird sanctuary scene is quite romantic, visitors can take check-in photos, take wedding photos, feed birds and many other activities.
After finishing the boat trip to explore the forest, remember to stop by the observation tower, which is equipped with a telescope with a 25km view for you to admire the entire vast cajuput forest. From here, you can see the images of the villages of the Khmer and Kinh people living there.
In addition, you can rent a bicycle to ride around and take pictures with animals in Tra Su mangrove forest. This is an opportunity for you to see the process of birds foraging, nesting and listening to the peaceful sound of birds chirping.
Nestled in the middle of the quiet forest is a hundred-meter-long love bridge, becoming an attractive highlight of Tra Su Melaleuca Forest. In particular, this place also owns a Guinness record-breaking work called the Thousand-Step Bamboo Bridge, built from all kinds of Vietnamese bamboo from all over the country. Wandering on the beautiful bamboo bridge, you will enjoy the feeling of being immersed in nature and time almost standing still. No dust, no noise, no reinforced concrete, Tra Su Melaleuca Forest is an ideal tourist destination to help you slow down, listen to your heart and heal your soul.
When visiting the cajuput forest, you can rest assured that there are full dining services available. According to the experience of traveling to Tra Su cajuput forest of travel enthusiasts, when coming here, you can freely enjoy rustic dishes at extremely affordable prices.
In the Tra Su Melaleuca Forest Ecotourism Area, you will find two restaurants with quite good quality. The first is Ut Thao restaurant right next to the motorboat dock, the second is Tra Su restaurant located at the observation tower. Both restaurants serve Western specialties such as field mouse meat, grilled snakehead fish, sour hotpot with linh fish and sesban flowers, snakehead fish cooked with lotus flowers, chicken grilled with honey from Melaleuca flowers, etc. In addition, you can also dine in cool leaf huts, eat while admiring the majestic natural scenery, breathing in the fresh air with the faint scent of Melaleuca resin.
In addition, when going through the sightseeing road on the bridge of ten thousand steps, you can also enjoy many strange and equally attractive snacks such as palm cake, banana with coconut milk, grilled sticky corn with scallion oil. The most delicious must be the cool palm cups, made from the typical type of An Giang land.
Tra Su Melaleuca Forest is about 30km from Chau Doc city and about 64km from Long Xuyen city. Currently, there are no buses or coaches passing through this route. Therefore, according to the Tra Su Melaleuca Forest Guide , you should go to Chau Doc city first and then rent a motorbike or call a taxi to move around. However, according experience of traveling to Tra Su Melaleuca Forest, motorbike will be the most suitable means of transport. This means of transport helps you save costs and is also suitable for the winding roads leading into the forest. The motorbike journey will also allow you to breathe fresh air and admire the majesty of An Giang’s mountains and hills.

We went on a private trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, the whole trip plan was organized for us by the Impress Travel Company from Vietnam, the company did an amazing job, the whole trip was organized in a wonderful way with an amazing match between the various parties, their choices were correct and the quality of the hotels chosen were very high quality and it is important to note that the price was low in comparison To other agencies, thanks to Impress Travel and especially to Daniel who was tolerant and open to changes and organized the route for us.
Impress travel were amazing. Did my bookings with Daniel for our tour of Vietnam and I must say Daniel was very professional and prompt with his services. All the arrangement, plans, pick-up & drop-off services, hotels, vehicles, sightseeing tours and guides were spot on and excellent. Did 4 nights Hanoi, 1 night Hà Long Bay cruise, 3 nights Hoian, 4 nights Saigon and 1 night in Can Tho. It was totally awesome. Every part of the journey was superbly arranged and planned. I will highly recommend Impress Travel for anyone interested in visiting Vietnam. Very organized and reliable!
