Day 01

Hanoi – Tuyen Quang – Ha Giang

At approximately 7:00 AM, our tour guide and driver will meet you at your hotel in central Hanoi. Leaving the busy capital behind and travel north through the countryside of the Red River Delta toward Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang.

The landscape gradually changes from fertile plains to forested hills, rivers and increasingly dramatic mountain formations. Besides, there are several stops will be arranged along the way for refreshments, photography and opportunities to observe rural life.

Next you will have lunch at a local restaurant, then continue traveling along the Lo River toward Ha Giang City, the gateway to Vietnam’s northern frontier. Depending on the arrival time, you will enjoy a gentle walk through a nearby Tay village. Where traditional stilt houses stand among rice fields, palm trees and vegetable gardens.

Then, you will check in at a locally operated homestay or eco-lodge. In the evening, enjoy a home-cooked dinner featuring regional ingredients and learn about the lifestyle and customs of your host family.

Day 02

Ha Giang – Bac Sum Pass – Quan Ba – Yen Minh

Estimated distance: 105 km

In the morning, you will enjoy breakfast at the homestay before beginning the mountain section of the expedition. The road climbs through Bac Sum Pass, offering the first panoramic views of the rugged terrain for which Ha Giang is renowned.

You will stop at Quan Ba Heaven Gate, located at the entrance to the Dong Van Karst Plateau. From the viewpoint, you will admire the surrounding limestone mountains, Tam Son Valley and the distinctive Quan Ba Twin Mountains.

Next, you will continue to visit Nam Dam Village, home to the Dao ethnic community. Here, you can walk along quiet village paths and observe traditional rammed-earth houses, agricultural activities and local handicrafts. This is an opportunity to gain a respectful insight into daily life in the northern highlands.

After having lunch in Tam Son, you will continue traveling through Can Ty and remote valleys toward Yen Minh. The afternoon journey passes forests, terraced fields and small ethnic minority villages tucked beneath the mountains.

Arrive in Yen Minh in the late afternoon. Check in and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or homestay.

Day 03

Yen Minh – Tham Ma Pass – Hmong King’s Palace – Lung Cu – Dong Van

After enjoying breakfast, you will depart Yen Minh and travel through beautiful pine-covered mountains toward Tham Ma Pass. You will stop at the pass to admire its famous winding road and the limestone peaks rising above the valley.

Then, you will continue traveling through the Dong Van Karst Plateau, recognized for its exceptional geological landscapes and cultural diversity. The route passes Pho Cao and Sung La Valley, where traditional houses, stone fences and seasonal flower fields create a distinctive highland setting.

Next, you will visit the Hmong King’s Palace in Sa Phin. Built in the early twentieth century, the residence combines Hmong, Chinese and French architectural influences. Moreover, our guide will explain the history of the Vuong family and its former influence across the region.

After your lunch, you will continue to visit Lung Cu Flag Tower, situated near Vietnam’s northern frontier. Here, you can climb the steps to the observation platform for sweeping views over mountain villages, patchwork fields and karst valleys.

In the late afternoon, you will travel to Dong Van and check in at your hotel. Enjoying your time to explore Dong Van Old Quarter, where historic houses surround a small central square. If your visit falls on a weekend, the town may be livelier with market activities and local gatherings.

Day 04

Dong Van – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Nho Que River – Meo Vac – Bao Lac

You will begin the day with breakfast in Dong Van. If the local market is operating, take a short walk through its colorful stalls. Where residents from surrounding communities gather to trade agricultural products, textiles and household goods.

Then, you will depart Dong Van along the Happiness Road toward Ma Pi Leng Pass. Considered one of Vietnam’s most spectacular mountain routes, the pass follows steep limestone cliffs high above the Nho Que River.

Next, you will stop at selected viewpoints to admire Tu San Canyon and the layers of mountains extending toward the horizon. Continuing to the boat station for a cruise along the emerald Nho Que River. Surrounded by towering cliffs, the journey offers a completely different perspective of the canyon.

After the boat trip, you will proceed through Meo Vac and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon journey follows remote roads through Niem Son and Bao Lam, passing Hmong, Dao and Tay settlements.

Arriving in Bao Lac in the late afternoon. Depending on the road conditions and available time, you will visit a nearby village inhabited by the Black Lo Lo or San Chi community before checking in.

In the evening, you will enjoy dinner and a peaceful night in this remote mountain district.

Day 05

Bao Lac – Khau Coc Cha Pass – Pac Bo Historical Site – Cao Bang

In the morning, you will have breakfast at hotel, then departing Bao Lac for one of the most adventurous sections of the journey. You will travel through the highlands of Cao Bang and stop at a viewpoint overlooking Khau Coc Cha Pass, also known as Me Pia Pass.

The pass is famous for its multiple switchbacks stacked across the mountainside. Subject to weather and trail conditions, you may take a short walk to a viewpoint offering a clearer panorama of this extraordinary road.

Then, you will continue traveling through valleys and small settlements toward Pac Bo. After your lunch, you will visit Pac Bo Historical Site, a peaceful area surrounded by forested limestone mountains.

Next, you will walk beside the clear waters of Lenin Creek and visit Coc Bo Cave. Where President Ho Chi Minh lived and worked after returning to Vietnam in 1941. Other significant landmarks in the area help explain the historical importance of this remote border region.

Later, you will continue traveling to Cao Bang City. Check in at your hotel and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 06

Cao Bang – Phuc Sen – Ma Phuc Pass – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Nguom Ngao Cave – Khuoi Ky

Following breakfast, you will leave Cao Bang City and travel toward Trung Khanh District. Stopping in Phuc Sen, a Nung community known for its traditional blacksmithing craft. Depending on workshop availability, observe local artisans using techniques passed down through generations.

Then, you will continue traveling across Ma Phuc Pass, surrounded by limestone peaks and rural valleys. The drive forms part of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang geopark landscape and offers numerous opportunities for photography.

You will arrive at Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the most impressive natural attractions in northern Vietnam. The waterfall forms a series of broad cascades surrounded by rice fields and karst mountains near the Vietnam–China border. Spending your time walking through the area, photographing the scenery and, when locally permitted, taking a bamboo raft closer to the cascades.

After your lunch, you will visit Nguom Ngao Cave. Following the illuminated pathway through chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites and naturally sculpted limestone formations.

Later, you will continue traveling to Khuoi Ky Stone Village. Traditional Tay houses in the village are constructed from local stone, creating a distinctive architectural landscape. Checking in at a family-operated homestay and enjoying your dinner prepared with regional ingredients.

Day 07

Cao Bang – Phuc Sen – Ma Phuc Pass – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Nguom Ngao Cave – Khuoi Ky

In the morning, you will enjoy breakfast at the homestay before saying goodbye to your hosts. You travel through the countryside toward Cao Bang City and continue across forested mountain passes to Ba Be National Park.

The journey passes through valleys, ethnic minority villages and areas of dense subtropical vegetation. Then, you will stop for lunch at a local restaurant before arriving at the national park.

In the afternoon, you will board a local boat for a scenic journey across Ba Be Lake and along the Nang River. Surrounded by limestone mountains and evergreen forest, the lake offers a peaceful contrast to the rugged roads of Ha Giang and Cao Bang.

Depending on water levels, weather and operating conditions, the boat journey may include Puong Cave, Cam Village and Dau Dang Waterfall. Your guide will introduce the natural environment and the relationship between the lake and the Tay communities living along its shores.

Finally, you will disembark near Pac Ngoi Village and walk to a traditional stilt-house homestay. Especially, you will have a chance to enjoy dinner with your host family. As well as spending the final night of the tour overlooking the tranquil lake and surrounding mountains.

Day 08

Ba Be Lake – Pac Ngoi Village – Hanoi

In the morning, you wake to the peaceful atmosphere of Pac Ngoi Village and enjoy breakfast at the homestay. Then, taking a gentle morning walk through the village, passing traditional Tay stilt houses, rice fields and lakeside gardens.

Depending on the departure time and weather conditions, you will have an optional short walk to a nearby viewpoint or another village may be arranged. This final cultural encounter offers time to appreciate the quiet rhythm of rural life before leaving Ba Be National Park.

Finally, you will begin the return journey to Hanoi, stopping for lunch in Bac Kan or Thai Nguyen. Continue traveling through the northern countryside and arrive at your hotel in central Hanoi at approximately 4:30–5:30 PM.

  • Meo Vac’s principal traditional market usually takes place on Sunday. When the tour dates do not coincide with market day, an alternative local market or cultural experience may be arranged where possible.
  • Ha Giang’s mountain roads include numerous bends and extended driving periods. Travellers who experience motion sickness should prepare appropriate medication.
  • Travel times may change due to weather, traffic and mountain-road conditions.
  • Warm clothing is recommended from late autumn to early spring, as temperatures can be considerably cooler in the highlands.
