Overview :
The Independence Palace was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic by Decision No. 77A/VHQĐ dated June 25, 1976, by the Minister of Culture. On August 12, 2009, the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam signed Decision No. 1272/QD-TTG ranking the Independence Palace Historical Relic as one of the top 10 special national relic sites. first of the country.
The management agency of the historical relic of the Independence Palace is the Reunification Hall. According to Decision No. 709/QD-VPCP dated June 14, 2013, of the Minister, the Chairman of the Government Office defining the functions, tasks, powers, and organizational structure of the Reunification Hall, the Assembly Hall Thong Nhat is a public non-business unit under the Government Office that has the function of managing, preserving and embellishing the historical monument of the Independence Palace; serving delegates and guests attending meetings and conferences of the Government, the Prime Minister, and the Government Office; conferences and other activities of the Party, State and National Assembly upon request; may make use of physical facilities and labor to provide services following the provisions of law.
History :
The Independence Palace was built during the French colonial period. On February 23, 1868, the Governor of Cochinchina Lagrandière held a groundbreaking ceremony to build the Palace of the Governor of Cochinchina in Saigon.
In 1962, a bombing caused the main left-wing and the gate of the Independence Palace to completely collapse. Because it could not be restored, Ngo Dinh Diem decided to level it and rebuild the mansion right on the old ground.
Architecture:
The new palace is 26m high, located in a 12ha campus, with an area of about 4500m2. In which, the usable area is up to 20000m2 with 3 main floors, 2 mezzanines, ground floor, 2 basements, 1 terrace used to park helicopters.
Uniquely designed Independence Palace, the whole Palace has more than 100 rooms decorated in different styles to suit each purpose. Up to now, this is still a project with bold architectural imprints, affirming the talent and ingenuity of architects as well as builders.
