Get ready to spend a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of this heritage that cannot be missed in Vietnam on your next Hanoi Historical Tours!
Let’s begin exploring the fascinating history of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, one of Vietnam’s most important cultural treasures. The citadel was initially established in the 11th century by Emperor Ly Thai To and, except for modern times, was sited in what is now modern-day Hanoi, having been chosen for its advantageous location near rivers, mountains, and fertile land. This place had a very good view for defense and average conditions for agriculture; therefore, it was the best place for establishing a political and cultural center. From that time on, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long has been the pulsar of the dynastic power of Vietnam, representing great rulers of the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen Dynasties.
Today, it is still possible to find remnants of the great architecture of the Imperial Citadel while walking through the place, which has changed and adapted over time. Every dynasty put its stamp on the citadel, whether it was by the Kinh Thien Palace, by Doan Mon Gate, or by fortifications that surrounded the area. You will feel the harmony of ancient architecture from Vietnam, mixed with elements from neighboring countries, reflecting the complex history and rich culture of Vietnam.
On the other hand, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was not just a political center; it was a place where culture and religiosity thrived. The most important state ceremonies, military deliberations, and religio-ceremonial activities all took place within these walls. It has played a very critical role in shaping Vietnam’s identity, not only as a kingdom but also as a resilient and culturally rich nation.
This treasure of history became, in 2010, a UNESCO World Heritage Site a truly well-deserved honor. This recognition proves that this citadel universally had value, and it is to be preserved for future generations. To history-loving travelers taking Hanoi Historical Tours, this site is a living testimony to the glorious past of Vietnam. Never miss an excellent opportunity to explore it!
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Hotel Pick-up and Introduction to Hanoi Historical Tours
We will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30 AM and drive to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. While driving through bustling streets in the heart of Hanoi, making your way through fascinating corners, I will be introducing you to the deep history of this city: from its very ancient past to its sprawling present. That will be a great introduction to what you are about to witness! Hanoi has always been the heart of Vietnam, a jumble of culture, power, and history, and today you have a chance to visit its crown jewel-the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long.
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: The Hanoi Flag Tower
First, we go to see the Hanoi Flag Tower, an important icon of the capital since its construction in 1812. More than 33 meters in height, it has been the silent witness to many important events in history. It is more than a tower; it’s a reminder of the pride of this city: undying efforts and determination by its people. On our walk, I’ll show you an interesting insight into how this flag tower came out alive with French colonial attacks and used to act as a military lookout. From here, you’ll have panoramic views of Hanoi, perfect for photo stops. You will not want to miss the chance to take in this historical city from one of the most well-known and important landmarks.
9:30 AM – 10:00 AM: The North Gate – Cua Bac Next, a visit will be made to Cua Bac, otherwise known as the North Gate and one of the few original gates into the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. This gate is not only a piece of surviving history but also a silent witness to the different struggles that the city had to endure against foreign invaders. The gate was badly damaged in the French invasion in the late 19th century but still stands today to this day for its resilience. So I’ll be telling you the story of two Vietnamese generals, Nguyen Tri Phuong and Hoang Dieu, who fought valiantly at this gate during the battles for Hanoi. Standing right in front of this gate, you can almost breathe in the weight of history crowding to remind you of bravery and sacrifices from among Vietnam’s defenders.
10:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Imperial Citadel of Thang Long –Kinh Thien Palace Our next stop goes to the heart of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, which is the Kinh Thien Palace. Being much ruined, the palace does not appear as a palace, but the stone foundation gives a glimpse into what it used to be like. It was here that royal ceremonies and state affairs were held, and hence it was the political center for the emperors of the Ly, Tran, and Le Dynasties. I will take you on a journey through its details, from the magnificent carvings of dragons that have survived several centuries to the grand staircase. Imagine yourself coming up the grand stairs and picture the emperors, generals, and scholars who stood right here and shaped the future course of Vietnam.
10:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Doan Mon Gate
From the Pinnacle of Heaven Palace, we’ll take the great Doan Mon Gate formerly the grand entrance to the Forbidden City, home of the emperor. Doan Mon is one of the most beautiful ancient buildings. It is designed with five arched gateways, symbolizing the power and authority of the emperor. Walking through this gate is like strolling back into time – the story of every stone! All this becomes much more alive when one steps through this gate to the grandeur of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, picturing the imperial processions passing under these very arches.
11:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Archaeological Site at 18 Hoang Dieu
Later in the morning, we will visit the exciting 18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site, which has revealed part of the ruins of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, dating back more than a millennium. You will see pottery, ceramics, and house foundations from the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties. I’ll walk you through these amazing findings and show how they tell us about the daily lives, culture, and traditions of the people inhabiting the citadel. These constitute the real treasure island of Vietnamese history, and the way these exhibits have been preserved over centuries is just a wonder in itself.
6:00 PM – 6:30 PM: Illuminated Doan Mon Gate
We will start the evening tour when the sun sets and the lights turn on at the beautifully illuminated Doan Mon Gate. At night, a magical tint of light paints the citadel, and you will feel as though you have slipped into an unworldly era. The walking through the gate in soft lanterns and spotlights has the charm of adding one more tinge of mystery and elegance to the historical feeling.
