The “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the Air" Campaign
Huu Tiep Lake is the place always associated with a well-known “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the Air" victory, marking one of the most essential moments in Vietnam’s resistance during the Vietnam War. Between December 18-December 29, 1972, Hanoi was continuously exposed to an attack by US enemy forces with their “Invincible B-52 bombers." Of course, on the other extreme area, there were defenders around Huu Tiep who counterattacked against B-52 bombs with surface-to-air missiles and iron determination.
On the night of December 27, 1972, one B-52 bomber was shot down and fell into Huu Tiep Lake in Ngoc Ha Village. It was not only a military victory but also became a strong symbol symbol of Hanoi’s unyielding spirit. The success of this campaign made U.S. forces retreat and scale down their assault, leading to the signing of the Paris Peace Accords, which secured Vietnam’s road to independence.
Cultural and Historical Value
Nowadays, Huu Tiep Lake is located in Ngoc Ha Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, and has become a hub in the heart of history and full of symbolic meaning. It preserves the remaining parts of B-52 that lie submerged in the lake for the victory of Hanoi. Many tourists often ring their hearts with emotion gazing upon this sight that relieves them with bravery and survival.
As Huu Tiep Lake was recognized as a national historical relic, this site is now under protection so that the story will stand for future generations.
