Vietnamese Art Museum

While approaching the very building of the museum itself, one can’t help but be immediately struck by its fabulous architecture. The building morphs French colonial design with the architectural motifs of Vietnam eloquent, timeless space is created. High ceilings and large windows with detailed woodwork compose an environment that is as inspiring as the art within. Imagine walking through its grand entrance, the mere architecture being an evocative overture to the great artistic experience waiting inside.

Explore Hanoi Gallery Tours for Permanent Exhibits: A Journey Through Time

Our Hanoi Gallery Tours take you on a journey through a series of permanent exhibits in the museum that span thousands of years of Vietnamese art. Each room offers a new perspective and story:

Ancient Vietnamese Art

We start off with the oldest pieces in the collection and follow the artistic beginnings of Vietnam back to prehistoric times. The displays take us through ancient pottery, tools, and decorative items that may tell us about the early creativity and craftsmanship of the country. You will walk through to see the appearance of traditional motifs that began to materialize and set the trend for centuries of artistic expression.

Medieval Buddhist Art

Further ahead, we get to a collection of Buddhist art and one on Vietnam. It is here, with statues, carvings related to temples, and other ancient artifacts, that one sees how deeply this country has been influenced spiritually. The serene expression of the Buddha statues and minute detail in craftsmanship on the temple artifacts exhibit insight into Vietnam’s devotion and the medieval times regarding artistry.

Modern Art

Continuing our travel in time, the tour goes to the entering of Vietnam into the 20th century modern art. Works here hint at double influences: French and Vietnamese, unified in national pride by native artists. You will see bold colors, unique forms, and expressive scenes that capture the resilience and vibrancy of Vietnam through its recent history.

Special Collections

Notably, special collections to be seen in some of the museums that help complete our own Hanoi gallery tours include:

  • Dong Ho Folk Paintings: These are a series of folk paintings that vividly adopt bright colors, and playful themes, describe the life of ordinary people, and satire rural charm. They are very merrymaking tributes to Vietnamese customs that leave a grin on your face.
  • Cham Sculptures: These are indeed marvelous feats of the talent and skill of ancient stonework considering these sculptures are perfect in detail. They reflect, even to this day, an ancient kingdom called Champa. And hardly does another view of Cham culture and influence on the art of Vietnam present itself.
  • Intricate Lacquerware: Indeed, lacquer art made Vietnam a celebrated country, and the pieces in this place are breathtaking. The items range from lacquer boxes to elaborate wall pieces, each shining bright in color and craftsmanship that shows just how delicate and painstaking this traditional art can be.

From here, leaving the museum, our Hanoi Gallery Tours go outside out into the fresh air to see two iconic sites nearby.

Temple of Literature in Hanoi Gallery Tours

Temple of Literature

  • Temple of Literature: Located just a 400 meter walk away from the museum, this striking historical site is Vietnam’s first university and a center of learning and culture in the country. You will be taken on an easy stroll in its tranquil courtyards and ancient buildings to get an insight into the educational traditions of Hanoi.

12:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Lunch at a Local Restaurant

Lunch will consist of local flavors that Hanoi is so famous for! We then head to a nearby restaurant where you will be able to indulge in traditional dishes such as pho popular street Vietnamese noodle soup, and bun cha, a dish of traditionally grilled pork served with rice noodles. It is a great opportunity to rest, recharge, and taste some of the best food Hanoi will have to offer.

Afternoon Sightseeing (1:45 PM – 4:30 PM)

Spending the afternoon, our Hanoi Gallery Tours continue to take us to two more places that are not to be skipped in Hanoi.

  • Hoa Lo Prison Museum: The last visit is paid to Hoa Lo Prison, previously called the “Hanoi Hilton." In this historical spot, one can get the greatest glimpse of the determination of the Vietnamese revolutionists and better understand the road taken by the nation toward independence. The guide takes visitors on a tour through the stories of the brave men and women who were held captive here, thus involving them with a touching atmosphere.
