Traveling west along the legendary Route 9 before crossing from Vietnam into Laos through the Lao Bao–Dansavanh International Border Gate. From there, you will discover the colonial architecture and sacred temples of Savannakhet, the relaxed riverside atmosphere of Vientiane. As well as the dramatic limestone scenery of Vang Vieng and the spiritual charm of UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang.

Tours Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Da Nang – Transfer to Hoi An

Welcome to Central Vietnam. Upon arrival at Da Nang International Airport, you will meet our local tour guide and transfer to Hoi An. This is a beautifully preserved trading port with a rich blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and European influences.

After checking in at the hotel, you will enjoy free time to recover from your journey or take an independent stroll through the lantern-lined streets beside the Thu Bon River. In the evening, Hoi An becomes especially atmospheric as colorful lanterns illuminate its old houses, cafés and waterfront.

Overnight in Hoi An.

Day 2: My Son Sanctuary and Hoi An Ancient Town

After having breakfast, you will travel through peaceful countryside to My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site hidden within a lush valley. Then, exploring the surviving brick temples constructed by the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries. From here, our guide will explain the sanctuary’s religious significance, architectural techniques and connections with Hindu culture.

Next, you will return to Hoi An in the afternoon for a walking tour of the Ancient Town. Visiting the Japanese Covered Bridge, a traditional merchant’s house, a Chinese assembly hall and the colorful local market. In addition, you will also have time to explore handicraft workshops and riverside streets at your own pace.

Overnight in Hoi An.

Day 3: Hoi An – Marble Mountains – Hai Van Pass – Hue

Following breakfast, you will leave Hoi An and travel north toward Hue. You will stop at the Marble Mountains, a cluster of limestone hills featuring caves, Buddhist sanctuaries and panoramic viewpoints. 

Afterward, you will continue traveling along the scenic coastline and cross the spectacular Hai Van Pass, weather permitting. The mountain road offers impressive views over Lang Co Lagoon, forested slopes and the East Sea. 

Arriving in Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital, and check in at the hotel. Later, you will visit Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the city’s most recognizable religious landmarks, overlooking the Perfume River.

Day 4: Hue Imperial Heritage Tour 

You will begin the day at the Hue Imperial City, the former political and ceremonial center of the Nguyen Dynasty. Here, you will walk through monumental gates, courtyards, temples and the remains of the Forbidden Purple City while learning about Vietnam’s last royal dynasty. 

In the afternoon, you will visit one of Hue’s most impressive royal tombs, such as the Tomb of Emperor Minh Mang or Khai Dinh. Each complex reflects the personality and aesthetic preferences of the emperor for whom it was constructed. 

You continue the tour at Dong Ba Market, where stalls display local produce, household goods, handicrafts and regional specialties.

Overnight in Hue. 

Day 5: Hue – DMZ – Lao Bao – Savannakhet

After an early breakfast, you will depart Hue for the journey along National Route 9 toward the Vietnam–Laos border. En route, you will travel through Quang Tri Province and visit selected sites associated with the former Demilitarized Zone.  Which once divided North and South Vietnam. 

Depending on road conditions and the operating schedule, stops may include the historic Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River or the Khe Sanh Combat Base area. Besides, our guide will provide historical context while maintaining a respectful approach to the region’s wartime heritage. 

Next, you will continue traveling to the Lao Bao International Border Gate. You will complete immigration and customs procedures, and cross into Laos at Dansavanh. Then, meeting our tour guide and driver before continuing through mountain landscapes to Savannakhet. 

This is the longest traveling day of the itinerary, but it provides a fascinating transition between the landscapes and cultures of Vietnam and Laos.

Overnight in Savannakhet. 

Day 6: Savannakhet Discovery – Vientiane 

After having breakfast, you will enjoy a short orientation tour of Savannakhet, a laid-back Mekong town known for its multicultural history. Here, you can see its French colonial buildings, the historic Catholic church and local Buddhist sites. When accessing and timing permit, visit That Ing Hang, one of southern Laos’s most revered stupas. 

Then, you will continue traveling north through rural Laos toward Vientiane. Along the way, you can observe villages, rice fields and everyday life beside the Mekong corridor. Besides, there are several comfort and refreshment stops will be arranged during the journey. 

You will arrive in Vientiane in the evening and check in at the hotel.

Overnight in Vientiane. 

Day 7: Vientiane City Tour 

In the morning, you will enjoy breakfast at hotel. Then, you discover the relaxed capital of Laos on a guided city tour. Beginning the tour at Wat Sisaket, renowned for its cloister walls containing thousands of small Buddha images. You will continue traveling to nearby Haw Phra Kaew, a former royal temple that now houses an important collection of Lao religious art. 

Afterward, you will visit Pha That Luang, the golden national monument regarded as a symbol of Lao Buddhism and sovereignty. Besides, you will stop at Patuxai, Vientiane’s monumental arch, before seeing the unusual sculptures of Buddha Park on the outskirts of the city. 

In the late afternoon, you will enjoy free time to walk along the Mekong riverfront or browse the evening market.

Overnight in Vientiane. 

Day 8: Vientiane – Train to Vang Vieng – Blue Lagoon 

After enjoying breakfast, you will transfer to the railway station and board a modern train to Vang Vieng. On arrival, you will meet our local driver and travel into the surrounding countryside. Where limestone mountains rise above rice fields and traditional villages. 

Then, you will visit one of the area’s accessible caves before continuing to a Blue Lagoon. Subject to local conditions and the selected site, you may swim, relax beside the water or simply enjoy the tropical scenery. 

Returning to Vang Vieng town in the afternoon. The remainder of the day is free to explore the riverside, visit a café or watching the sunset behind the limestone karsts.

Overnight in Vang Vieng.

Day 9: Vang Vieng Countryside – Train to Luang Prabang 

You will enjoy breakfast at the hotel before exploring more of Vang Vieng’s picturesque countryside. Passing through farming communities and admire the dramatic karst formations for which the region is famous. Or taking a short walk through the rural landscape may be arranged according to weather and guest preferences. 

Later, you will be transferred to the railway station for the journey to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival, you will meet our local guide and transfer to the hotel. 

In the evening, you have chance to explore the atmospheric night market. Where local artisans sell handwoven textiles, traditional crafts, artwork and regional products.

Overnight in Luang Prabang. 

Day 10: Pak Ou Caves and Luang Prabang Heritage Tour 

In the morning, you will have breakfast at hotel, then boarding a traditional boat for a relaxing cruise along the Mekong River. From here, you can observe forested hills, riverside communities and scenes of daily life as you travel toward the Pak Ou Caves. 

Especially, these sacred caves are located where the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers meet. So, they contain thousands of Buddha images placed there by pilgrims over many generations. On the return journey, a stop may be made at a traditional village known for weaving, handicrafts or local rice-based products. 

Next, you will be back in Luang Prabang, then exploring the historic center and visiting Wat Xieng Thong. This is one of the finest examples of classical Lao temple architecture. You will continue to visit the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, subject to its opening schedule. 

End the day, you will travel at Mount Phousi. Where those comfortable with the climb can enjoy panoramic views over the old town, surrounding mountains and Mekong River.

Overnight in Luang Prabang. 

Day 11: Kuang Si Waterfall – Luang Prabang Departure 

After enjoying breakfast, you will travel through the countryside to Kuang Si Waterfall, one of the most beautiful natural attractions in northern Laos. Following shaded forest paths to a series of turquoise pools and cascading falls. Depending on weather and local regulations, there may be an opportunity to swim in designated areas. 

Then, you will return to Luang Prabang and transfer to the airport or railway station for your onward journey. The 11-day Central Vietnam and Laos discovery concludes with memorable impressions of imperial cities, ancient temples, historic roads. As well as Mekong landscapes and welcoming local communities.

  • Day 5 and Day 6 involve extended overland travel. Actual journey times depend on traffic, road conditions and immigration procedures.
