Phu Quoc Prison on Phu Quoc Island was initially built in the late 1940s by French colonialists to house Vietnamese political prisoners who were fighting for independence. Later on, during the Vietnam War, it was expanded and became one of the most notorious places of incarceration under the Americans and South Vietnamese. Cruel conditions and inhumane treatment of detainees incarcerated within these walls marked the maximum capacity attained of more than 40,000 prisoners.
The very architecture of the Phu Quoc Prison on Phu Quoc Island was designed for keeping dangerous prisoners: huge concrete walls, barbed wire, and the infamous “tiger cages" small, cramped cells made of iron that exposed inmates to extreme weather conditions. Torture chambers equipped with devices for the application of electric shock and other vicious methods of physical beating turned this prison into a real hell for those imprisoned.
Despite such harsh conditions, prisoners at Phu Quoc Prison on Phu Quoc Island showed great character strength, and courage. Many were frontline freedom fighters who exuded a spirit and took heart even when faced with the most inhumane treatment. Stories of daring escapes, where prisoners dug tunnels to freedom, recount their spirit. For every one of these successful breakouts, however, there are many stories of suffering prisoners surviving isolation, starvation, and incessant torture without ever giving up.
