Tour in Details

History & Mysteries of Ta Prohm

The Ta Prohm temple is situated inside the Angkor Archaeological Park, in Rohal village, Nokor Thom commune, Banteay Srei district, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, and the temple lies approximately one kilometre (0.6 miles) east of Angkor Thom. It takes about 15 minutes to travel to the temple from Siem Reap town

Constructed in 1186 AD by King Jayavarman VII, Ta Prohm was initially known as Rajavihara, “Monastery of the King.” Dedicated to his mother, it was a holy site that doubled as a Buddhist monastery as well as a significant place of learning and storage for over 12,500 monks, scholars, and over 600 Apsara dancers.

The temple was abandoned soon after the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century. The site had been taken back by the jungle, trees scaling the walled barriers and towers, and growing from within them. The combination of nature and ruin in this beautiful Ta Prohm Tour is the reason behind its specialness for everyone who has visited.

In the late 19th century, French explorers rediscovered the temple and decided not to renovate it completely. Instead, they’ve left it semi-overgrown as it was, which is why the Ta Prohm, as it exists on the Ta Prohm all Inclusive Tours, is such an authentic, atmospheric experience.

Ta Prohm is also known for its unexplained mysteries:

  • Some of the roots of trees do not crawl over the faces of Buddha carved onto the walls – no one knows why.
  • There are rumors of a secret royal burial chamber hidden deep beneath the temple.
  • One of the most popular spots is the “echo chamber,” where clapping or pounding oneself on the chest can produce a deep, resonating sound through the stone walls.

Ta Prohm’s Unforgettable Highlights

Towering Tree Roots Wrap the Stone

The highlight of any Ta Prohm tour has to be the massive Tung and Kapok tree roots gripping the temple. These roots are not planted next to the temple – they have grown through it. They pour over rooftops, traverse corridors, and slither around doorways in astonishing forms. Many of them grew from above, when birds deposited seeds into cracks here centuries ago. It is this incredible meld between nature and architecture that makes the Ta Prohm all inclusive tour so visually special.

The Jungle Canopy Above

Above, a dense umbrella of jungle trees cocoons the temple in cool shadow. Flat Color: An exciting scene and environment, to me, are flat color sunsets and colors; everything looks magical and dreamy by itself. It’s not hard to imagine Buddhist monks wandering below these trees hundreds of years ago – a feeling that is hard to replicate on a Ta Prohm tour.

Ancient Stone Carvings

Indeed, it is the carved reliefs in stone that animate the Khmer spirituality throughout the temple. You will see graceful Apsara dancers, placid Bodhisattvas, and colorful mythological scenes. Art from these temples is our cultural riches and adds meaning to every visit to a temple. And don’t forget your camera – they are among the most beautiful and preserved details in the temple.

Tomb Raider Filming Location

This is where the filming of the movie Tomb Raider (2001) took place. The star-studded shooting spot is still open today and well worth a visit if you are a film fan. That’s one of the best photo spots in the temple and an awesome way to meet other travelers on your Ta Prohm tour.

The Echo Wall (Chest Drum Effect)

One of the most surprising highlights of Ta Prohm is the “Chest Drum Wall” – a natural echo chamber hidden within the temple. You can step close, pat your chest, or clap your hands lightly, and you’ll hear the sound echo back like the beat of a drum. This acoustic trick is site-specific and adds a fun twist to your Ta Prohm all-inclusive tour.

How to Prepare for Your Ta Prohm Tour

Dress with Respect

Ta Prohm is a sacred site, so dress respectfully. Please wear shirts and pants covering knees and shoulders. Lightweight fabrics with good airflow are ideal for the tropics and keep you cool while being respectful of local customs.

Choose the Right Footwear

You will be walking on ancient stone paths, rough ground, and possibly wet, mossy spots. Strong, comfortable, sturdy sneakers or hiking boots with a good tread are highly recommended for safety and comfort while walking during the Ta Prohm tour.

Best Time to Visit

The best months for comfort are November to February, when it’s cooler and less humid. When traveling in warmer temperatures, do early morning tours to avoid the heat of the day and have softer light for photos.

What to Bring

 Prepare a small daypack with:

  • A refillable water bottle (stay hydrated)
  • Sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun
  • A light poncho or umbrella when traveling during the rainy season
  • A cell phone or camera – that’s what a photographer wants
  • Enough money for souvenir shopping around the neighborhood
