The My Son Sanctuary is a remarkable architectural ensemble that developed over 10 centuries from the 4th to the 14th century. It includes over 70 structures, representing a variety of architectural styles such as temples and towers.
The site is very significant historically having structures of Hindu deities like Shiva and Vishnu. The detailed carvings and writings tell of the spiritual life and style of the Cham people. They were heavily damaged during the Vietnam War, but most ruins have been painstakingly restored to give visitors an idea of their former grandeur.
My Son Sanctuary is a center for the administration of the prince, and also a cemetery for many generations of the Champa king. The towers and temples in this city were built of special metals that amazed historians, which have been a subject of research from archaeologists too. The fact that these structures were built entirely without mortar – instead using precisely carved bricks – speaks to the Chimingesewrs construction technique.
My Son was bombed heavily during the Vietnam War and thus much of it was ruined. Nevertheless, the site has been undergoing efforts at restoration by Vietnamese and international experts alike, whose attention is drawn to maintaining the historical – cultural values. Now My Son a living proof of the resistance of heritage, as if saying that can to conceal our own past.
