The young and ambitious Jayavarman V, who ascended to the throne at the age of ten, ordered the building of Ta Keo Temple in Angkor as a state temple to embody royal divinity. The design was left to the master builders of the day, and the outcome was a novel, geometric ziggurat-style temple, something that was not attempted in most Angkor temples.
This is where legend becomes history. Just when the final details were about to begin, lightning struck the upper sanctuary, a religious omen, which was seen as a bad sign. Soon after, Jayavarman V passed away, and political unrest followed. No artisans returned.
