Explore Cham Island by Speedboat: Travel Guide for Beginners
Do you long to run away to a paradise where time itself has stopped moving, and the environment wraps around you as if in a soft hug? Well, Cham Island is just that, becoming a recognized biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2009. Located in Quang Nam province outside of Hoi An and Da Nang, this wildlife oasis is an adventurer’s playground. So follow along as I tell you the story of my amazing 3-day explore of Cham Island by speedboat and bring you an ultimate guide so you can enjoy this experience as much as I did.
Location and Travel Information
Cham Island sits some 20 km from Hoi An and 45 km from Da Nang. I selected the speedboat for a bit of an adrenaline hit. A short, 20-minute scooter ride from Hoi An. The experience is like riding the waves in a movie star fashion. However if you happen to be in Da Nang this is a little longer journey as you need to drive and take a boat here but it is worth it.
Transport Choices
To get to Cửa Đại port, you’ve got a few choices:
Taxi: Easy to find, costing around 12,000 – 15,000 VND/km. Great if you’re in a group.
Car Rental: About 550,000 – 600,000 VND per day, offering flexibility.
Motorbike: My favorite. For 100,000 – 150,000 VND per day, it’s cheap and fun. Just follow Google Maps.
The Boat Ride
Once at Cửa Đại port, you have two options:
Leaving from Bạch Đằng wharf (Hội An) at 7:30 am for leisure travelers. It will take 2 hours and cost 100,000 VND for locals, and 150,000 VND for foreigners.
Speedboat: 15-20 min, great (and fun) for the thrill seekers, costs: 350000 VND return ticket Good for a touch of adventure aboard a speedboat to explore Cham Island.
Best time to visit: Visit Cham Island by speedboat year-round, but the best time for a more complete exploration is from March through August. During these months the weather is good, the sea is quiet and the chances of rain are zero which makes it perfect for Beach activities, Underwater adventures, etc.
Must-Visit Attractions on Cham Island
Cham Island
There are a lot of sightseeing trips that Cham Island can offer to pleasure your body, eyes and soul. A Few Places You Defiantly Should Visit

Ancient Cham Well: A 200-year-old well in Xóm Cấm, legends say it once saved a whole village! Exporters like to say it can cure seasickness and bring you good luck. I sipped some last night and although I can’t speak for the good fortune, it was quite refreshing.
Hai Tang Pagoda is a tranquil 400 year pagoda located at the foothill Although you do not have to be religious, the solitary environment is ideal for some quiet reflection.
Beautiful Beaches:
Bãi Ông: A long, white sandy beach with warm blue waters ideal for all types of water sports. I remember 1 fine afternoon I spent, Sunbathing and rolling in the waves.
Bãi Xếp: accessible, remote beach with beautiful coral reefs for snorkeling. The quality of aquatic life here is unparalleled.

Water-Based Activities:

Snorkeling and Diving: The crystal clear waters, combined with diverse aquatic life, make for excellent conditions for diving down into Cham Island. They are most commonly seen at Bãi Xếp (Toad Beach) and Hòn Dài. Diving is your playground, with a world of vibrant coral reefs and colorful fish at every turn.
Sea Walking: You will get the experience of walking on the sea bed and this being of a kind water sport, helps you to walk on the sea floor to have a closer look at marine life without having dive skills. It’s a surreal experience!
Land-Based Activities:
Camping: facilities are available at sites like Bãi Ông for those who prefer connecting with the island’s beauty in a more rustic manner. It was an experience I will never forget – falling asleep under the stars with the sounds of waves rushing in.
Fishing with Locals: Participate in Fishing with Locals where you can learn traditional fishing methods from local fishermen and fresh seafood directly served on the plate. It is very interesting and learning.
Hiking: Take advantage of the many trails on the island that weave through dense, old-growth forests and up to awe-inspiring vistas. The hikes are a little heavy, but the views are nice too.
Other Activities:
Local Markets: Craft, fresh, and seafood at Tân Hiệp Market. It is a lively venue of local life.
Nature: Join an eco-tour to hear more about the conservation efforts present on the island and to see some wildlife native to Nature. These tours are informative and enlightening.

Comparing Independent Travel and Package Tours
If you are about to adventure Cham Island by speedboat then the most common options for you would be to choose from doing it on your own or participating in a tour program with the same Each one of them comes with a set of pros and cons, as well as different cost implications. Both of them offer very unique experiences so here is a comprehensive comparison to choose the one if it appeals more to your travel style.
Independent Travel:
Pros:
Flexibility: Independent travel means you can set your schedule and go with the flow Stay at each place as long as you want and choose on the fly where to head next.
Personal Exploration: you can find some of those off-the-beaten-path places, and engage with locals more directly and in a much more personalized manner.
Cons:
Planning and Logistics: Independent travel is more laborious because of the higher emphasis on planning, arranging transport, accommodation, and activities. This type of search can take time and cause some stress, especially if you do not know the location.
Higher Costs: The total cost may end up being higher because tour operators get a bulk booking discount that you do not.
Costs:
Speedboat fare: 200,000 VND per person
Entrance fee: 70,000 VND
Eco fee: 20,000 VND
Meals: 150,000 – 200,000 VND
Snorkeling or other activities: 200,000 – 300,000 VND
Total Estimated Cost: Approximately 800,000 – 1,000,000 VND for a day trip
Package Tours:
Pros:
Convenience: Package tours are convenient since all is prepared for you-you have your transport, your meals and so on, along with skilled guides to lead you in the right direction. Which is a good opportunity to just chill and take it all in, free from the burden of organizational responsibilities.
Cost-Effective: Tours tend to offer better bang for the buck, get group discounts, package in multiple services and include them all in one price.
Guided Experience: Expert guides share engaging stories about the history, culture, and ecosystem of the island directly to you.
Cons:
Fixed schedule: You must follow a fixed timetable and you don’t have the flexibility to stop on the road or let yourself lie along with view some green grass. We cannot take spontaneous detours or decide one day to extend our stay in a specific place.
Pre-set Itinerary: Tours take you through a set path that may include locations you care less about and pass by sites you wish to see.
Costs:
Cost of a tour: half day 500,000-600,000 VND
Extra costs mainly include transportation (both land and sea), entrance fees, meals, and guided nature activities so the price is very a whole package option at a more budget-friendly rate.
Cost Comparison:
Independent Travel: Approximately 800,000 – 1,000,000 VND
Better for people looking for a more flexible and tailored experience but also costlier and requires much more preparation.
Package Tours: Approximately 500,000 – 600,000 VND
Budget travelers looking for convenience, guided experiences with lane planning references.
