1. A1 Hill

A1 Hill is located in Muong Thanh Ward, Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province. It’s the most important base of the French colonial base in Dien Bien Phu. A1 is the symbol that the Vietnamese army places for the hill. On the morning of May 7, 1954, the Vietnamese army captured the hill A1.

2. Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum

Covering 22,000 square meters, the museum has about 1,000 objects divided into different exhibitions featuring the strategic locations of Dien Bien Phu, the enemy’s scheme at Dien Bien Phu, the Party’s guidelines regarding preparations for the Dien Bien Phu campaign, the impact of the Dien Bien Phu victory at home and abroad, and present-day Dien Bien Phu. The museum is tremendously important in helping visitors to better understand the glorious history of the Vietnamese nation.

3. Dien Bien Phu Military Cemetery

Dien Bien Phu Military Cemetery is located in Dien Bien Phu. Use our Dien Bien Phu online trip maker to visit Dien Bien Phu Military Cemetery on your trip to Dien Bien Phu, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

4. A Pa Chai – Long Phu border gate

Located in Sin Thau commune, Muong Nhe district, Dien Bien province, A Pa Chai is about 250 km from Dien Bien Phu. It is a milestone marking the territories of Vietnam, Laos and China.

5. Bunker of Colonel de Castries

West of the Ron River, the dank command bunker of Colonel de Castries has been recreated, though there’s little to actually see. A discarded tank and some mortar guns linger nearby. You might see Vietnamese tourists mounting the bunker and waving the Vietnamese flag, re-enacting an iconic photograph taken at the battle’s conclusion.

6. Noong Chun Village

Noong chun village is located about 4 km from Dien Bien Phu city center (Nam Thanh ward, Dien Bien Phu city). From the city center, you go through Dien Bien Museum, Martyrs Cemetery and Hill Monument A1 to column 78, then turn right to power pole 142, go straight to the village gate.

It takes  1h 10 min and nonstop from Noi Bai airport to Dien Bien Phu.  The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the decisive engagement in the First Indochina War (1946–1954). After French forces occupied the Dien Bien Phu valley in late 1953, Viet Minh commander Vo Nguyen Giap amassed troops and placed heavy artillery in caves of the mountains overlooking. The French planned to lure the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, into the valley by sending 16,000 French troops as bait. They belives that it is an impregnable fortress. The French, however, did not count on the brilliant leadership of General Vo Nguyen Giap who somehow managed to place the Vietnamese artillery on the surrounding ridges. From March until May 1954 the Viet Minh pounded the French positions until the French capitulated with the loss of 3,000 men. It is estimated that the Viet Minh lost more than twice that number. There was the first time in a major military campaign, an Asian army colony defeated the army of a European power. Later you visit the headquarter of General Giap during the Dien Bien Phu campaign. We will have the chance to meet several of the different ethnic minority tribes here when we visit the villages of both the Thai and H’ mong people.
